The German Federal Ministry of Defence is planning to procure four MEKO A-200 class frigates as an interim capability measure amid delays to the F126 programme, according to a ministry statement issued on 19 March. The proposed acquisition is intended to bridge a capability gap until the delivery of the Type 126 frigate, which is now expected to slip beyond its original timeline. In parallel with ongoing negotiations with Naval Vessels Lürssen over the continuation of the F126 project, Berlin is pursuing the procurement of commercially available MEKO A-200 frigates from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. Under current planning assumptions, deliveries of the MEKO A-200 platforms could commence from late 2029. The vessels are expected to support Germany’s commitments to NATO, particularly in the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) domain. The ministry emphasised that this dual-track approach—continuing F126 while introducing MEKO A-200—serves as a risk mitigation measure and does not prejudge the future of the F126 programme.

Germany’s parliamentary Budget Committee has approved an amendment to a preliminary contract originally signed on 28 January 2026. The modification enables TKMS to maintain production slots with subcontractors and suppliers, while also procuring long-lead materials and equipment. According to the ministry, extending the preliminary agreement is necessary as preparatory steps for a final construction contract—including tendering, bid evaluation, pricing reviews, contract drafting, and parliamentary approval—remain incomplete. The statement further noted that construction of the F126 frigates by the Dutch prime contractor has encountered “significant delays”. Discussions are ongoing with Rheinmetall’s Naval Systems division as a potential alternative prime contractor for the programme.

The MEKO A-200 design has been identified as a viable bridging and supplementary solution. Industry feedback indicates that the first unit could be delivered by December 2029, provided production capacity is secured in advance through early contractual commitments. The MEKO (Mehrzweck-Kombination) family of warships—developed by Blohm+Voss—is based on a modular design philosophy that allows flexible integration of weapons, sensors, and mission systems. This approach is intended to simplify maintenance and reduce lifecycle costs. The MEKO portfolio includes frigates, corvettes, and offshore patrol vessels, with configurations tailored to customer requirements. Within the MEKO 200 lineage, different operators employ varying main gun systems, including the Mk 45 naval gun, French 100 mm guns, or the Oto Melara 76 mm naval gun. The MEKO A-200 represents an evolution of the original MEKO 200 design introduced in the late 1980s.
