Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) has unveiled an upgraded iteration of its Viking 6×6 Uncrewed Ground Vehicle (UGV), incorporating advanced autonomous software and expanded multi-role weapon integrations aimed at high-threat operations. Developed by the Bolzano-based subsidiary of Leonardo, the enhanced multirole platform is integrated with IDV Robotics’ Mission Automated Core Engine (MACE) system, which leverages AI-driven passive and active sensors for autonomous navigation, mission planning, and obstacle avoidance. Designed to remove human operators from hazardous frontlines, the 1,300 kg (kerb weight) platform features an expansive 2,200 mm by 1,800 mm payload area with a 750 kg capacity, enabling rapid field reconfiguration across logistical, medical evacuation, CBRN, and combat support roles.

To demonstrate the platform’s multi-mission versatility, IDV has introduced the Viking 6×6 in two heavy combat configurations tailored for modern asymmetrical warfare threat environments. The first variant integrates Leonardo’s highly automated HITROLE® Counter-Uncrewed Aerial System (C-UAS) weapon station, establishing a localized, rapid-response air-defense capability. The second variant integrates an MBDA ground-launched precision missile system, transforming the vehicle into a long-endurance tactical strike asset capable of anti-armor and precision interdiction missions. These integrations underscore a broader defense industry trend aimed at weaponizing modular robotic architectures to project remote firepower without risking dismounted personnel.

Mobility is delivered via a parallel diesel-electric hybrid powertrain coupled with an independent all-wheel-drive suspension and lockable differentials engineered by IDV’s specialist automotive division. The powertrain configuration allows the Viking 6×6 to attain a maximum road speed of 45 km/h, negotiate 60% gradients, cross 350 mm vertical steps, and ford depths up to 600 mm. Crucially for low-observable and covert operations, the high-voltage battery architecture provides an extended electric-only operational range of 30 km on flat terrain. When operating in silent watch mode, the platform can maintain system functionality for over 24 hours, while combined hybrid operations extend the vehicle’s total operational range beyond 300 km.

Measuring 3,000 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 900 mm in height to the load bed, the Viking 6×6 maintains a tight 7-meter minimum turning circle utilizing dual two-wheel and four-wheel steering mechanisms. Safety frameworks conform to military operational standards, featuring three physical emergency-stop (E-stop) buttons distributed across the chassis and a primary override mapped to the operator’s handheld tactical controller. The system is designed to operate across all light conditions within an operational temperature envelope of -20°C to +39°C, positioning IDV to capture expanding international market demand for autonomous tactical support and modular land defense infrastructure.
