Kalyani Strategic Systems Unveils MArG 39 Truck-mounted Howitzer at Eurosatory 2026

Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL), a subsidiary of Indian defense manufacturing giant Bharat Forge, has officially unveiled its MArG 39 155 mm/39-caliber truck-mounted howitzer at the Eurosatory 2026 defense exhibition in Paris. The system represents a significant expansion of India’s domestic artillery portfolio, developed under New Delhi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and Make in India initiatives. Engineered as a highly mobile Mounted Gun System (MGS), the MArG 39 integrates a 155 mm artillery piece onto a dedicated 4×4 High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) platform, optimized specifically to satisfy tactical requirements for rapid multi-terrain deployment and “shoot-and-scoot” operational profiles. The development program was executed with technical guidance and assistance from the Indian Armed Forces to ensure the architecture matches contemporary requirements for high-altitude and rugged terrain warfare.

The platform features an independent suspension architecture, an automated transmission system, and a central tire inflation system (CTIS), enabling tactical cross-country operations on severe gradients up to 30 degrees. To mitigate the high dynamic stress transmitted to the light 4×4 vehicle chassis during firing cycles, the platform is equipped with a large, heavy-duty hydraulic stabilizer spade assembly mounted at the rear of the vehicle. Prior to engaging targets, the stabilizer is hydraulically lowered to the ground to anchor the platform. This spade mechanism absorbs and redistributes severe recoil forces across the ground footprint. Additionally, the structure serves an auxiliary purpose by functioning as an elevated working platform for the loading crew and integrating a dedicated mounting bracket for a spare wheel storage system.

Strategic Impact and Export Footprint
The MArG 39 architecture marks an important milestone for India’s defense industrial sector, securing its position as the first domestically developed mounted gun system to successfully enter the international export market. Prior to its formal unveiling at Eurosatory 2026, the Ministry of Defence of Armenia publicly showcased the acquisition of the MArG system on February 7, 2026, following a series of government-to-government defense agreements signed with India. Crucially for Yerevan’s force modernization efforts, the exported MArG 39 variant has been modified to support seamless digital integration with the Armenian Armed Forces’ indigenous command-and-control (C2) network infrastructure. This allows the truck-mounted howitzers to receive automated target coordinates directly from forward observers and counter-battery radars, minimizing the kill chain and maximizing the platform’s survival probability against peer adversaries utilizing advanced counter-battery capabilities.

Key Specifications:

  • Caliber Configuration: 155 mm / 39-caliber (Family modularity supports 45 and 52-cal configurations).
  • Tactical Mobility: 4×4 HMV, independent suspension, automatic gearbox, operational capability on up to 30-degree slopes.
