A senior naval source has confirmed that a Type 056 corvette transferred from the People’s Republic of China to the Royal Cambodian Navy arrived at Ream Naval Base on 4 April, berthing at Pier 1 with its full complement of crew. A formal handover ceremony is scheduled for 08 April at 0900 local time. The transfer forms part of a broader bilateral defence co-operation programme that includes the supply of two corvettes of the same class, aimed at enhancing Cambodia’s maritime security capabilities and expanding its operational reach in coastal waters.According to the source, construction of the second vessel is ongoing, with completion estimated at approximately 70%. Delivery is anticipated by June 2026, suggesting a phased induction plan for the new platforms. The report also noted that acceptance trials for the lead vessel were conducted in October 2025, with participation from senior Cambodian defence officials, including former defence minister Tea Banh. The acquisition has drawn attention from regional observers, as Cambodia continues to modernise its naval forces amid ongoing maritime sensitivities in Southeast Asia. Neighbouring countries, including Thailand, are reportedly monitoring developments closely, particularly in light of expanding capabilities at Ream Naval Base.

The Type 056, known in NATO nomenclature as the Jiangdao-class, is a littoral combat corvette designed and produced for the People’s Liberation Army Navy. Entering service in 2013, the class was developed to fill the capability gap between fast attack craft and larger frigates, such as the Type 054A. The improved Type 056A variant incorporates enhanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, including towed array and variable depth sonar systems. Measuring approximately 90 m in length and displacing around 1,500 tonnes, the platform is optimised for green-water operations, including patrol, escort, and maritime security missions. It has a reported maximum speed of 25 kt and an operational range of about 3,500 n miles at cruising speed. The vessel is equipped with a 76 mm main gun, dual 30 mm close-in weapon systems, and YJ-83 anti-ship missiles. Air defence is provided by an eight-cell launcher for short-range surface-to-air missiles, while ASW capabilities include triple 324 mm torpedo launchers. A flight deck accommodates helicopters in the Z-9 class, although the design does not incorporate a hangar.
