The Israeli Ministry of Defence (IMOD) has finalized a major procurement deal worth approximately USD 150 million (ILS 500 million) with the U.S.-based defense contractor AM General LLC. The contract will deliver several hundred High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), commonly known as Humvees, to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Ground Forces. Approved by IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram, the agreement was signed by Israel’s procurement delegation in the United States. The contract encompasses not only the delivery of vehicles but also an extensive logistics support package, including spare parts to ensure long-term operational availability. The first shipment of dozens of Humvees is scheduled for delivery in late 2025.

The newly acquired HMMWVs will be tailored to meet the operational requirements of the Israel Defense Forces’s diverse mission profile. According to the Israeli Ministry of Defence, these multipurpose vehicles will be configured for troop transport, casualty evacuation, logistical resupply, fire support, communications, and special operations. The specific Israeli configuration enables each vehicle to transport over ten soldiers and support medical evacuation scenarios, offering both mobility and adaptability in high-intensity combat environments. This upgrade is expected to enhance the IDF’s tactical flexibility and rapid response capabilities across various terrains and conflict zones.

First introduced in the 1980s, the Humvee is a well-established light tactical vehicle used by the U.S. military and numerous allied nations. It famously replaced earlier-generation light transport platforms including the M151 Jeep and the M561 Gama Goat. The vehicle’s high off-road mobility, durability, and ease of maintenance have made it a staple on battlefields from the Gulf War to more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. While the original unarmored variants faced vulnerabilities against modern threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), subsequent upgrades and adaptations—including up-armored versions—extended the Humvee’s battlefield relevance. In recent years, the vehicle has been gradually phased out of frontline service by the U.S. military, replaced in many roles by the Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).

Headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, AM General is a veteran manufacturer of military and heavy-duty vehicles. Its production facility in Mishawaka, Indiana, has been the hub of Humvee manufacturing since the mid-1980s. The company has also participated in the U.S. military’s Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle (CUCV) programs and has produced over 250,000 HMMWVs for military clients worldwide. The firm is also known for its foray into the civilian market with the iconic Hummer brand, which was eventually acquired by General Motors. While AM General ceased its civilian Hummer production in the 2000s, the military version remains a workhorse in more than 60 countries.
