Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has successfully completed internal developmental and firing trials of its indigenously designed Mounted Gun System (MGS), built around the 155 mm/52-caliber Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) ordnance. The system integrates the heavy artillery platform onto an 8×8 high-mobility vehicle chassis to enhance operational flexibility and rapid deployment capabilities. These internal evaluations were conducted to validate structural integrity, recoil management, and automated gun-laying mechanisms ahead of formal user trials with the Indian Armed Forces.
The platform combines the proven firepower of the ATAGS—originally co-developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with private sector partners—with a heavy-duty truck platform for superior off-road maneuvering. The MGS configuration features automated loading assistance, digitized fire-control software, and modern positioning units designed to shorten reaction times during shoot-and-scoot operations. By transitioning the towed 155 mm/52-caliber architecture to a wheeled chassis, the mobile artillery solution aims to fulfill army requirements for long-range strike capabilities across diverse operational environments, including high-altitude border regions and arid terrains.
Following the successful completion of company-level testing, the Mounted Gun System is expected to undergo rigorous field evaluations conducted by the Indian Army to assess performance under extreme environmental conditions. If approved for procurement, the platform will compete to fulfill the service’s broader artillery modernization requirements, which emphasize indigenous production under defense self-reliance initiatives. Tata’s system offers a key mobile alternative to traditional towed howitzers, providing enhanced crew protection and speed of redeployment on the modern battlefield.
The completion of these trials underscores the growing technical capacity of India’s private defense sector to manufacture advanced mobile land systems.
