Lithuanian Armed Forces Boost Firepower with Expal 120-MX2-SM 120 mm Towed Mortars

In the final days of 2023 the Lithuanian Armed Forces received 120 mm Expal120-MX2-SM towed mortars of Spain’s EXPAL Systems, S.A. The advanced superior quality equipment will enhance indirect fire capabilities in the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The contract worth approx. EUR 9.8 million covers mortar systems and spares. Mobile and versatile, the system enhances fire power and precision to increase infantry and artillery responsiveness to tactical requirements in ensuring indirect fire support. Lithuania’s new defence equipment has the effective range of up to 8 km. The Defence Materiel Agency under the Ministry of National Defence signed the contract with the Spanish company EXPAL Systems, S.A. in the autumn of 2022.

Expal’s 120-MX2-SM is a one-axle trailer-based 120 mm mortar capable of engaging a wide variety of targets at ranges of up to 8 km. The trailer holds up to 16 mortar bombs and their propellant charges. A well-trained mortar team is able to set up the weapon system and make ready to fire within one minute. After the fire mission is completed, the mortar can then be relocated within 90 seconds. Designer and manufacturer of smoothbore mortars, The company offer a modern, reliable and high-quality system, combat proven in all versions 60, 81 and 120 mm. Over 35 NATO and allied Armed Forces trust in Expal mortar systems.

Expal Systems develops, manufactures, integrates and services for the defense and security sectors; weapon systems, munitions and energetic products; applications and technological systems; maintenance services, modernization and integrated logistics support for military vehicles and aircraft systems; as well as demilitarization and EOD services. Rheinmetall AG has completed its takeover of all shares in Expal Systems S.A.U. of Madrid. The purchase price for the takeover of Expal Systems S.A.U., a world-renowned ammunition and armament manufacturer, is about €1.2 billion. First announced last November, the acquisition follows final approval by the relevant authorities. The transfer of Expal S.A.U.’s business activities to Rheinmetall took place on 1 August 2023.
