AM General, an U.S. defense company, has successfully delivered 66 Humvee light armored vehicles to the Serbian Army through a direct contract. This recent shipment is part of a larger order for a total of 118 Humvees. The newly acquired vehicles are currently stationed at the Pancevo barracks and are intended for various purposes, including deployment in international peacekeeping missions. It is important to distinguish this shipment from previous donations made by the United States to Serbia.
In 2012 and 2017, the U.S. donated a total of 40 Humvee light armored vehicles to the Serbian Army, primarily utilized by the Special Brigade in Pan?evo and the 31st Infantry Battalion in Zaje?ar. The value of the vehicles handed over to the Serbian Armed Forces now amounts to slightly over 3.8 million US dollars. When considering the 40 vehicles donated by the U.S. so far, including this recent shipment, the total value exceeds 7.5 million US dollars.
The Humvee’s outstanding performance attributes were also acknowledged, including its ability to navigate slopes of up to 55 degrees and endure 30 percent side slopes, as well as the capability to ford water up to 110 cm. The HMMWV has become the vehicular backbone of U.S. forces around the world. Over 10,000 HMMWVs were employed by coalition forces during the Iraq War. Its combat use during the Gulf War in 1991 inspired civilian versions known as Hummers. Over time, the vehicle’s design has been upgraded with armor due to its vulnerability to improvised explosive devices during the Iraq War. As frontline units were replaced by the MRAP, the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program sought to find a successor, eventually selecting the Oshkosh L-ATV for production in 2015.
