Rheinmetall Contracts Thales for German Army Optronics Upgrade

Rheinmetall as prime contractor for the programme has commissioned Thales to supply optronic systems supply in the mid-four-figure range, including its combat-proven and readily available XTRAIM sighting systems, as well as its new-generation night vision systems, which account for the vast majority of the commissioned delivery. These are capable of displaying augmented reality information and providing unparalleled tactical situational awareness. Thales will provide support services for these solutions in Germany, ensuring close proximity to customers throughout their operational lifecycle. XTRAIM is a day/night sight that combines reflex sighting and thermal imaging, enabling rapid and accurate target engagement in all visibility conditions while reducing the burden of equipment carried by the solider. Designed to meet the demands of high-intensity combat, around 20,000 units have been sold to armed forces worldwide.

Building on the success of Thales’ NightRise family of night vision binoculars, the new-generation night vision system developed by Thales is designed to enhance soldiers’ survivability by providing a superior understanding of the tactical environment. Featuring an open architecture, the system facilitates interoperability and seamless connectivity with military equipment already in service, forming the core of the Optronic Soldier System. The German armed forces will be the first customer to field this new night vision system from Thales. With more than 35 years of experience and 120,000 units sold in 55 countries, Thales is a global leader and pioneer in night vision systems. The Group’s optronic solutions are continuously developed in close collaboration with operational users and are deployed by both conventional and special forces.

“Thales is honoured to contribute, alongside Rheinmetall, to the protection and operational effectiveness of German soldiers through its advanced combat-proven solutions. These systems pave the way for future modernisation opportunities within the IdZ-ES programme. XTRAIM and our new night vision system will enhance day- and night-time combat capabilities, support faster decision-making, and improve the connectivity of solider-borne systems. In the coming months, Thales is investing several million euros in Germany to strengthen its industrial footprint in the country and reinforce its proximity to the German armed forces.” Christoph Ruffner, CEO and Country Director, Thales Germany.
