South Korean defense contractor Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has finalized the delivery of six additional T-50i Golden Eagle advanced trainer and light attack aircraft to the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU), bringing Jakarta’s operational inventory of the type to 22 units. The delivery fulfills a USD240 million contract signed in July 2021, which encompassed the six airframes alongside a comprehensive logistics and contractor support package. Shipments commenced via air freight to Juanda International Airport in Surabaya before final ground transport to Iswahyudi Air Force Base, building upon Indonesia’s initial 2011 acquisition of 16 T-50i aircraft to replace its aging BAE Systems Hawk Mk 53 trainers and OV-10 Bronco attack platforms. As the primary export customer for the T-50 platform, Indonesia’s total defense aviation procurement from South Korea now stands at 42 aircraft—including 20 KT-1 basic trainers—underscoring an expanding strategic defense partnership that extends to joint participation in the KF-21 Boramae next-generation fighter development initiative.
Originally co-developed by KAI and Lockheed Martin in the late 1990s as South Korea’s first indigenous supersonic platform, the T-50 family made its maiden flight in 2002 and entered service with the Republic of Korea Air Force in 2005. Designed to bridge the gap between advanced flight training and high-performance multirole combat operations, the platform has subsequently matured into specialized variants including the T-50B aerobatic aircraft, the TA-50 armed trainer, and the FA-50 light combat fighter. Beyond Indonesia, the Golden Eagle family has established a dominant export footprint across the Asia-Pacific, Middle Eastern, and European military aviation sectors, securing operational deployments with the Iraqi Air Force (24 T-50IQ units), the Philippine Air Force (12 FA-50PH units), and the Royal Thai Air Force (12 T-50TH units), while recently securing milestone orders from Poland for 48 FA-50 platforms and Malaysia for 18 Block 20 standard aircraft.
Aesthetically and aerodynamically modeled after the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon at approximately 80 percent of its scale, the T-50 features a tandem two-seat cockpit enclosed by a high-mounted Hankuk Fiber acrylic canopy rated for ballistic impact resistance against 4 lb objects at 400 kt. The structural airframe offers a certified service life of 8,000 flight hours and an operational ceiling of 14,600 m (48,000 ft), supported by an internal fuel system capacity of 2,655 L across seven fuselage and wing tanks with provision for an additional 1,710 L in three external drop tanks. Power is supplied by a single General Electric F404-102 turbofan engine, license-manufactured by Samsung Techwin and integrated with a jointly developed Full Authority Digital Engine Control system, generating 78.7 kN (17,700 lbf) of thrust with afterburner to propel the aircraft to a maximum velocity of Mach 1.5.
The avionics suite integrates Lockheed Martin-designed fly-by-wire controls—making the T-50 the first jet trainer to feature triple-redundant digital fly-by-wire flight control—alongside a Honeywell H-764G embedded GPS/INS, an HG9550 radar altimeter, and the indigenous MDS Technology NEOS real-time operating system certified to DO-178B and IEEE POSIX standards. Combat-capable light attack variants, such as the TA-50 and T-50i, incorporate an Elta EL/M-2032 fire-control radar, an internally mounted three-barrel 20 mm M197 Gatling cannon with linkless ammunition, wingtip rails for AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, and underwing hardpoints compatible with AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles, Hydra 70 rocket pods, cluster munitions, and general-purpose free-fall bombs.
