The Hungarian Air Force (HunAF) has achieved a significant operational milestone with the successful completion of the first scheduled maintenance for its Embraer KC-390 Millennium transport fleet. The depot-level work was executed by OGMA – Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal S.A., a major subsidiary within the Embraer group. Defense officials noted that the collaborative effort between the technical teams ensured strict adherence to precision aerospace standards, optimizing engineering efficiency, and sustaining high operational readiness for Budapest’s strategic airlift capabilities. The maintenance event underscores the expanding logistics and lifecycle support infrastructure for the KC-390 platform within the European theater. OGMA, situated approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Lisbon International Airport within the Alverca Aeronautical Park, serves as a primary hub for Embraer’s regional maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) network. The government of Portugal maintains a 35% minority stake in the aerospace firm, while Embraer controls the remaining 65% majority share. Operating out of a massive 440,000-square-meter facility—which includes 11 specialized hangars, an integrated control tower, and a 3,000-meter runway—OGMA provides industrial support to roughly 40 military and civil clients spanning 70 nations.

The C-390 Millennium is currently positioned as the heaviest aircraft designed and produced by the Brazilian manufacturer to date, carrying an estimated unit cost of approximately €80 million ($86.5 million) as of 2024. Powered by high-bypass turbofan engines, the medium-sized utility transport features a high degree of modularity integrated during its initial conceptual phase. This architecture allows the internal and external configurations to be rapidly interchanged to accommodate diverse mission parameters. For flight deck operations, the cockpit features Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion commercial avionics coupled with an Enhanced Vision System (EVS) utilizing four external tactical cameras and head-up displays (HUDs). The platform boasts a maximum payload capacity of 26 metric tons (57,000 pounds), allowing the transport of heavy mechanization assets. Its cargo hold—measuring 18.5 meters long, 3.45 meters wide, and 2.95 meters high—is engineered to accommodate two fully-tracked M113 armored personnel carriers, a single Boxer mechanised vehicle, or a Sikorsky H-60 series helicopter. Alternatively, the hold can be configured for 74 medical litters with life-support gear, 80 fully equipped troops, or 66 paratroopers. Aerial delivery tasks are managed via an integrated cargo handling system provided by DRS Defense Solutions, capable of low-velocity or gravity air-dropping loads up to 42,000 pounds (19 metric tons). Cargo hold environments also utilize advanced noise and vibration mitigation measures alongside automatic temperature control to maximize passenger comfort.

Budapest expanded its airlift modernization program in 2020 by placing an order for the twin-engine, jet-powered transport aircraft to replace its aging legacy inventory. According to procurement timelines, the HunAF took delivery of its first airframe on October 19, 2023, followed by the second on June 26, 2024, and a third variant in November 2025. These assets are permanently assigned to the Airlift Squadron “Teve” (Camel), stationed out of Kecskemét Airbase. Notably, the Hungarian Defence Forces customized their procurement configuration to include a specialized Intensive Care Unit (ICU) kit, a medical evacuation capability designed to support complex humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions globally. In addition to standard logistical transport, the Hungarian fleet retains the ‘K’ designation denoting its organic aerial refueling capability. The aircraft can deliver in-flight refueling utilizing two wing-mounted probe-and-drogue pods manufactured by Cobham plc. Drawing from a total internal fuel capacity of 35 metric tons (77,000 pounds), the system can transfer fuel at rates up to 1,500 liters (400 US gallons) per minute. This refueling envelope remains operational at speeds ranging from 120 to 300 knots, and at operational altitudes spanning 2,000 to 32,000 feet, providing critical force-multiplication assets for both Hungarian and allied NATO strike packages.
