The Spanish Navy, in collaboration with European defense manufacturer Destinus, has successfully demonstrated a containerized naval deployment concept for maritime air defense from the Santa María-class frigate Santa María (F-81). The test highlighted the rapid integration of the Hornet Block 1 subsonic threat interceptor system aboard existing naval platforms, exploring new approaches to enhancing surface combatant survivability against evolving aerial threats. By utilizing a modular, container-launched architecture, the demonstration validated how legacy hull forms can be rapidly retrofitted with supplementary air-defense capabilities without requiring extensive hull modifications or permanent integration into the vessel’s organic combat management system.

Designed specifically to counter the proliferation of mass-produced, low-cost aerial threats, the Hornet Block 1 functions as a radar-cued interceptor optimized for subsonic targets. The system is engineered to reverse the unfavorable cost-asymmetry currently faced by modern navies, offering a proportional defense mechanism against Group 3 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), loitering munitions, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, and coordinated swarm attacks. Boasting an operational range exceeding 75 km and carrying a 1.5 kg payload, the interceptor provides a mid-range layer of defense capable of neutralizing multiple incoming threats before they can penetrate the inner layer of a ship’s point-defense weapons systems.

The interceptor’s guidance package emphasizes operational resilience in highly contested electronic warfare environments, utilizing initial radar cueing followed by an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted terminal seeker for autonomous engagement. This combination of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) and radar guidance allows the Hornet Block 1 to operate effectively in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-denied environments, ensuring mission success even when satellite signals are jammed or spoofed. For ground-based air defense (GBAD) and maritime operations alike, the system can be integrated with multiple external radar architectures, providing flexible target acquisition and handover protocols prior to launching from its containerized housing.

This successful maritime demonstration aligns with Destinus’ broader strategic focus on supplying scalable strike and air-defense systems for European and allied armed forces.
