Embraer has successfully conducted the maiden flight of the first C-390 Millennium multi-mission tactical transport aircraft destined for the Czech Air Force. The flight took place at Embraer’s production facility in Gavião Peixoto, marking a critical milestone in the aircraft’s production and testing phase. The aircraft, bearing the distinctive grey livery and official “CZECH AIR FORCE” markings along with the national flag on the nose, underwent a series of flight maneuvers to evaluate its basic handling and systems performance. Upon its successful return to the airfield, the jet was greeted with a traditional water salute, witnessed by Embraer personnel and Czech military representatives. The Czech Ministry of Defence selected the C-390 Millennium to significantly bolster its tactical airlift capabilities. The acquisition is intended to provide the Czech Armed Forces with a robust platform capable of performing a wide array of missions, ranging from troop and cargo transport to medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) and humanitarian aid.
The C-390 offers several distinct advantages for the Czech Air Force:
- Enhanced Mobility: Powered by twin turbofan engines, the C-390 can reach speeds of up to 470 knots (Mach 0.8), allowing for faster response times across the NATO theater and beyond.
- Heavy-Lift Capacity: The aircraft features a maximum payload of 26 metric tons, capable of transporting heavy equipment, including armored vehicles and helicopters.
- Operational Flexibility: Designed for rapid reconfiguration, the Millennium can operate from unpaved or short runways, a key requirement for modern expeditionary warfare.
By adopting the C-390, the Czech Republic aligns its logistics and transport infrastructure with other European and NATO partners. Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Austria have also selected the platform, fostering regional interoperability and shared maintenance frameworks. Following this initial flight, the aircraft will undergo a comprehensive flight test program to validate all Ceko-specific systems and mission equipment. Delivery to the Czech Air Force is expected to proceed according to the established schedule, marking the beginning of a new era for the country’s fixed-wing transport fleet.
The Embraer C-390 Millennium is a medium-size, twin-engine, jet-powered military transport aircraft designed and produced by Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer. It is the heaviest aircraft the company has built to date. Several export customers for the C-390 have been secured, including the Portuguese Air Force, Hungarian Air Force, the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force, the Austrian Air Force, and the Swedish Air Force. Utilizing turbofan jet engines, the C-390 can be configured to perform various conventional operations such as troop, VIP and cargo transportation, and more specialised logistical operations such as aerial refuelling as a tanker. It can carry payloads of up to 26 t (57,000 lb)—such as two fully-tracked M113 armored personnel carriers, one Boxer armoured vehicle, a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter, 74 litters with life-support equipment, up to 80 soldiers or 66 paratroopers with full gear—and loads of up to 42,000 lb (19 t) can be air dropped. Each aircraft costs around €80 million as of 2024.
