The Royal Netherlands Air Force (Koninklijke Luchtmacht) has achieved a critical milestone in its pilot training modernization program following the successful maiden flight of its first Pilatus PC-7 MKX basic trainer aircraft. Selected by the Dutch procurement authority, Command Materiel & IT (COMMIT), under a competitive tender, Pilatus Aircraft will supply eight PC-7 MKX turboprop trainers alongside a comprehensive Ground-Based Training System (GBTS) that includes four flight simulators. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in the first half of 2027, making the Netherlands the launch customer for the upgraded platform, which will replace the air force’s aging fleet of original PC-7 Turbo-Trainers stationed at Woensdrecht Air Base.
Designed to serve as a cost-effective gateway to high-performance military aviation, the PC-7 MKX features an advanced glass cockpit configured around a modern three-display philosophy equipped with high-definition digital avionics. Powered by a proven Pratt & Whitney Canada turboprop engine, the aircraft retains the forgiving flight characteristics of the PC-7 Mk II baseline while integrating Martin-Baker ejection seats, making it the only aircraft in its light trainer class equipped with this critical emergency system. The platform’s docile handling parameters allow ab initio student pilots to safely master essential airmanship, aerobatics, and instrument flight procedures before progressing to advanced jet training phases.
At the core of the new Dutch pilot instruction framework is a fully integrated syllabus that places heightened emphasis on synthetic training environments to reduce live-flying flight hours and overall lifecycle costs. The accompanying GBTS suite incorporates interactive wallboards, conventional flight training devices, and Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) modules designed to increase student engagement and procedural immersion. By shifting a larger portion of basic instructional syllabi into high-fidelity simulators, the Dutch Ministry of Defence aims to maintain rigorous training throughput while minimizing fleet wear and environmental impact.
Furthermore, the PC-7 MKX suite introduces Pilatus’ specialized Training Management System—incorporating advanced mission planning and debriefing tools—into the early stages of flight instruction. Traditionally reserved for tactical conversion and operational conversion units, these digital analytics tools enable student pilots and instructors to review flight data and tactical situational awareness early in the learning pipeline. The contract reinforces a nearly four-decade defense partnership between the Netherlands and the Swiss aircraft manufacturer, which began with the initial procurement of the legacy PC-7 fleet in 1988.
