Kawasaki Heavy Industries Unveils Collaborative Combat Aircraft Concept

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has revealed its entry into the collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) domain with a new concept known as the Collaborative Support Aircraft (CSA), underscoring the company’s intent to expand its footprint in Japan’s evolving defence aerospace sector. At the core of the CSA concept is an uncrewed aircraft with an estimated weight of approximately 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) and an overall length of less than 10 m. The platform is being positioned as a flexible adjunct asset designed to support crewed systems in contested environments. Within the UAV segment, KHI is advancing research and development activities focused on the CSA concept.

Hiroka Shimokawa, president of KHI’s Aerospace Systems Company, identified defence programmes as a key driver of future growth for the company. He emphasised that securing participation in new programmes will be critical, citing stand-off missile systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, and next-generation trainer aircraft and associated training systems as priority areas. Shimokawa disclosed that the company is studying two primary configurations: a projectile-type vehicle with characteristics akin to a guided munition, and a more conventional aircraft-type design.

Concepts under consideration include multiple launch options. These range from ground- and naval-based launchers, similar to those used for guided missiles, to airborne deployment. The latter could involve the use of a transport platform such as the Kawasaki C-2, enabling high-altitude release of the CSA to extend operational reach and flexibility. KHI’s CSA initiative reflects a broader trend within Japan’s defence industry to develop autonomous and semi-autonomous systems capable of operating alongside crewed assets, as the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) continues to explore manned–unmanned teaming concepts in future air combat operations.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries is a Japanese public multinational corporation manufacturer of motorcycles, engines, heavy equipment, aerospace and defense equipment, rolling stock and ships, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. Kawasaki is active in a diverse range of the aerospace industry. The company is a contractor for the Japanese ministry of defence and has built aircraft such as the C-1 transport aircraft, T-4 intermediate jet trainer, and the P-3C antisubmarine warfare patrol airplane. Since 2007, it has built the P-1 maritime patrol aircraft, and since 2010, it has built the C-2 transport aircraft.
