A UK-based SME (Small or Medium-Sized Enterprise) that produces an innovative vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone, in which MBDA is a significant shareholder, has publicised its successful first flight that MBDA representatives were present to witness. The test flight by SME, Hybrid Drones Ltd, also demonstrated an expanded use case of the HYDRA-400 ultra-high lift uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV). Development pace is significant and MBDA is working with Hybrid Drones Limited on weaponizing the platform. MBDA became a shareholder of Hybrid Drones Limited – who specialize in heavy-lift, hybrid jet-electric UAVs – in 2025, and have provided technical and resource support to rapidly develop the platform to production standard.

Suzanne Jude, Senior Vice President – Sales & Business Development at MBDA, said:”This is a very significant development in our partnership with Hybrid Drones Ltd. Seeing the HYDRA-400 fly for the first time is truly exciting and a testament to the innovation that results from collaboration between industry leaders like MBDA, with our engineering expertise, and the cutting-edge technology of an SME like Hybrid Drones Ltd.”

The HYDRA-400 is in a class category of its own with no known competition. A modular design with a payload capacity of up to 400kg, Hydra 400 has a myriad of military, operational, and dual use functions. The platform can employ tactical weapons, conduct ship-to-ship transfer, last mile logistics, and even logistical and casualty evacuation roles. It is designed for battlefield assembly and is transportable via a flatbed truck. MBDA’s investment in Hybrid Drones Ltd was one of the first instances where the company became a shareholder of a UK SME. The investment secures the continued development of the Hydra 400 heavy lift drone, which is capable of carrying an array of payloads including casualty evacuation pods, cargo or weapon systems.

The UK has placed greater emphasis on uncrewed solutions for a range of battlefield scenarios, including logistical resupply, weapons system delivery, and casualty evacuation. The HYDRA-400 will now enter the next phase of development and testing as part of efforts to deliver a versatile solution to these challenges. The British Army’s Warfighting Experiment, which conducts live trials of emerging military technologies, provided a crucial framework for Hydra Drones to collaborate with MBDA, the UK MoD’s strategic partner for complex weapons.

  1. That makes no sense… more details about the size and motor of the drone would have been helpful, but with no data other than an image where you can see the size based on grass strip patterns of about 1mx1m drone with 8 motors with 3cm coils there is no way it could possibly lift 400kg.
Is it actually 3mx3m? how much does the drone weight? Is it just a 25% scale model in the image?
