The country’s Ministry of Defence on 27 February published a fact sheet on the G550 Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (G550-MSA), describing the twinjet as providing early warning of maritime threats and enhancing awareness in the maritime domain. Image of the aircraft released by the ministry showed the G550-MSA to have conformal housings on both sides of its fuselage and an enlarged nose and tail cones used to house sensor arrays, similar to the G550 Conformal Airborne Early Warning aircraft (CAEW) developed by IAI and operated by Israel and Singapore. Notably, the new acquisition will be in addition to Singapore’s planned buy of four P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol jets from Boeing. The specifications provided by the ministry suggest that the G550-MSA will be similar to IAI’s Oron special mission aircraft,

This is part of a 4-prong approach highlighted by Minister for Defence Mr Chan Chun Sing – Capabilities for the SAF to be a credible armed force, Commitment to Singapore’s defence, Contributions from the wider community and diversified portfolio of Connections – for MINDEF and the SAF to continue to defend 🇸🇬 amid wide-ranging challenges. On the first, he said that robust conventional capabilities remain core to a strong and credible deterrence. Chan Chun Sing saying the G550-MSA will complement the P-8A’s capabilities in replacing nine Fokker 50 maritime patrol/light transport aircraft. This supports the Singapore military’s mission in safeguarding Singapore’s sea lines of communication as part of Singapore’s maritime security surveillance network

The Gulfstream G550 is an American business jet aircraft produced by the General Dynamics’ Gulfstream Aerospace unit in Savannah, Georgia, US. The certification designation is GV-SP. A version with reduced fuel capacity was marketed as the G500. Gulfstream ceased production of the G550 in July 2021. The U.S. Military uses the Gulfstream G550 design as the C-37B and EA-37B Compass Call, the related Gulfstream V is the C-37A. It competed against the Bombardier Global 6000, which has higher direct operating costs and less range but a more spacious cross section, and the Dassault Falcon 7X with fly-by-wire flight controls, better fuel efficiency and a wider but shorter cabin. Flight hourly budget is $700–950 for engine reserves, $250 for parts and 2.5 maintenance hours.

Oron is Israel’s newest intelligence aircraft—a remarkable result of collaboration between MAFAT, IAI (IAI-ELTA), and the IDF. The project adapted an American-built Gulfstream G-550 business jet into a highly advanced intelligence platform, equipped with radar systems, elect-optics, and SIGINT capabilities. Its operational deployment was challenging because it was completed within just a few days during wartime. Nevertheless, since then, Oron (ELI 3150 ISTAR) has consistently delivered results that provide Israel with a strategic edge in real-time monitoring and focused intelligence. The intelligence aircraft accommodates a crew of eight intelligence officers and houses dozens of computers and thousands of sensors.
