The Singapore Army is introducing a new tactical surveillance drone, the Vesper, to enhance soldiers’ situational awareness on the battlefield. Developed by Vantage Robotics in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), the Vesper is a highly portable quadcopter drone that transmits high-quality video feeds to the Ground Control Station (GCS). The Vesper is designed to operate in all weather conditions, providing essential aerial surveillance capabilities for soldiers in combat. It can be deployed in both free-flying and tethered modes for persistent surveillance operations. The Infantry Scouts team utilizes the Vesper to conduct aerial reconnaissance of the target area before the main Infantry forces arrive. Within 90 seconds, the drone can be deployed from its carrying case and launched.
The data collected by the drone enables Commanders to make real-time adjustments to operational plans, increasing the chances of mission success. Equipped with two low-light cameras and an infrared (IR) sensor with 4K resolution and 48x zoom, the Vesper is capable of detecting targets even in dark environments, supporting both day and night operations. Mounted on a three-axis stabilized gimbal, the Vesper delivers a Full HD (1080p) live video feed to the GCS, even in low-light conditions. The Infantry forces can quickly deploy the Vesper from their Forming-Up Place (FUP) to provide support during an assault. With a maximum speed of 20 m/s (72 km/h), a low noise signature comparable to a whisper (less than 32 dBA at 25 meters), and a flight time of up to 50 minutes, the drone allows continuous surveillance of the target area during the assault.
Upon detecting enemy reinforcements, the Company Commander can send a team to intercept them. Thanks to the skills acquired during the Basic Vertical Take-Off and Landing UAV Operator Course (BVOC) and the Vesper’s user-friendly controls. Using the Vesper during the Exercise Panther Strike was seamless. The Vesper is lightweight, making it easy to handle in various operational settings. The battlefield is constantly changing, especially in urban environments. During Exercise Panther Strike, the Vesper provided a new level of tactical aerial surveillance, giving Commanders greater situational awareness to deploy troops effectively and achieve mission success.
