On September 3, the 1st Regional Logistics Base in Wałcz announced the signing of a significant contract with Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne SA (WZE SA) for the overhaul and modification of the NUR-22 (RT-22) radar stations mounted on Tatra 815 chassis. This contract, finalized on August 26, is valued at PLN 24 million and will span the years 2024 to 2026. The procurement process was both limited and expedited, with WZE SA being the sole bidder. Under the contract, WZE SA is tasked with restoring the full operational capability of all units and components of the radar stations, along with implementing software modifications. Specific details of the modifications remain undisclosed.
The NUR-22 “Izabela” is a self-propelled radar station used by the Polish Land Forces’ anti-aircraft units. It is designed to detect, track, and identify aerial targets. The radar has a detection range of up to 100 km and can identify objects with a radar cross-section of 1 m² flying at an altitude of 1,000 meters from a distance of 80 km. The radar system is built on a four-axle Tatra 815 truck chassis and was produced by the Polish defense industry between 1998 and 2003.
WZE SA has a history of signing contracts with the Inspectorate of Support for the Armed Forces for the maintenance and upgrade of NUR-22 radar stations, which remain a critical component in Poland’s air defense system. The radar is equipped with a 4.2 × 3.1 m parabolic antenna, capable of rotating at speeds of 6 or 12 rpm. The antenna is mechanically elevated on a frame, and the system features fully digital signal processing, allowing for the automatic tracking of up to 72 air targets. Additionally, the radar is integrated with the Supraśl identification friend-or-foe system and the RRC-9500 radio station.
Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne S.A. (WZE SA) began its operations in 1952. Initially it was a military unit and served as a modernization workshop for the radiolocation equipment. Military Electronic Works company was established on October 8, 1964 by Ordinance of the Minister of National Defence, No 62/MON. Military Electronic Works was transformed into a joint stock company owned by the State Treasury on January 1, 2008. The Ministry of National Defence supervised the company on behalf of the State Treasury. In 2014, following the Decision of the Minister of Treasury of the Republic of Poland, Military Electronic Works JSC became part of the Polish Armaments Group.
