The Nieuw Milligen radar station in the Netherlands has been equipped with the Thales Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) radar. This new radar will temporarily fill the gap left by the decommissioning of the Medium Power Radar (MPR) in March after an impressive 52 years of service, until the new SMART-L radar station in Herwijnen becomes operational. The Groundmaster 400a is not just a stopgap measure; it is a technologically advanced system, comparable in many respects to the SMART-L radar already operational in Frisian Wier since 2021. The GM400a stands out for its compact and transportable design, making it an ideal choice for interim radar coverage and rapid deployment across various locations.

The GM400α is an evolution of Thales’ renowned Ground Master 400 (GM400), boasting significant upgrades. The new version features five times the processing power of its predecessor, extending its range from 470 km to an impressive 515 km. It also integrates advanced artificial intelligence algorithms and enhanced cybersecurity features, cementing its position as one of the most trusted long-range air surveillance radars on the market. These systems are part of the Ground Master family of radars (alongside the medium range GM200 and GM200 MM/A and MM/C as well as the short-range GM60 and its variants) and have been purchased by many countries.

Leveraging years of successful field experience and advanced GaN technology, the Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) radar provides comprehensive situational awareness by detecting a wide array of threats. From high-speed jets and missiles to low-flying UAVs and hovering helicopters, the radar’s digital stacked beam technology ensures accurate tracking and detection at all altitudes. The system can be set up by a four-man crew in 60 minutes and can be remotely operated. The system fits in a 20-feet shipping container and weighs less than ten tons. The system can be rapidly deployed mounted on a 6×6 or 8×8 tactical truck and can be transported by a single C-130 aircraft or a helicopter.

The introduction of the GM400a in Nieuw Milligen follows the deployment of a mobile NATO radar that served for the past four months. With the GM400a and the forthcoming SMART-L radar, the Netherlands enhances its ability to monitor and secure NATO airspace while supporting military air operations. Additionally, these advanced radar systems provide crucial support to civilian agencies such as the police and other investigative services, reinforcing national security on multiple fronts. The arrival of the GM400a in Nieuw Milligen marks a significant milestone in the Netherlands’ commitment to maintaining airspace sovereignty and security. As threats continue to evolve, the GM400a’s advanced capabilities ensure that the nation’s air defenses remain robust and responsive.
