Pearson Engineering has released its latest development to provide combat engineering capability to unmanned ground vehicle. The company and Milrem Robotics working together to address a future conflict environment characterised by autonomy and robotics. The Pearson Engineering Light Weight Mine Roller is shown with Milrem Robotics’Type-X robotic combat vehicle and PROTECTOR light weight turret system on booth K145 in Hall 6 demonstrating the role of robotic combat vehicles in delivering engineering capability for others, and the requirement to protect such assets from pressure-initiated explosives. Based on expertise developed over Pearson Engineering’s four decades of providing mine ploughs to international end-users

Following the release of the RCV-Pioneer Urban Obstacle Clearance Mission Payload at DSEI 2023, which was proven during trials in the United States. The development is part of a planned roll out of engineering capability optimised for a conflict environment that is increasingly characterised by robotics, automation and autonomy. Of a number of Research & Development projects, the minefield breaching mission payload has been prioritised to respond to an increase in demand, driven by the proliferation of anti-tank mines in Ukraine and the threat posed to soldiers. Trial plans with several NATO nations are already in development for Autumn 2024.

Pearson Engineering’s Self Protection Rollers provide protection against live pressure initiated Improvised Explosive Devices across the track width of the vehicle. The Self Protection Rollers are designed to exert the necessary forces into the ground to initiate live pressure fused Improvised Explosive Devices across the track width of the vehicle. These roller types are temporarily fitted to the front of a vehicle which is going to be used in an area where there is a possibility of Improvised Explosive Devices. Ground-engaging wheels reach out significantly ahead of the vehicle to detonate the threat before the vehicle wheels reach it. This capability has saved countless lives and can be tailored to meet the very specific needs of the end-user.

The Type-X is a robotic combat vehicle designed and built by Milrem Robotics. Unveiled in 2020, the vehicle is operated from a safe distance by a combination of augmented artificial intelligence (AI) and a remote system operator which means it considerably raises troop survivability and lowers lethality risks by increasing standoff distance from enemy units. It features a tracked design with armor protection which increases its cross-country performance and durability. The Type-X is designed to be highly modifiable and easily upgradable, meaning it can be fitted with either autocannon turrets up to 50mm, such as John Cockerill CPWS II or various other weapons systems, such as ATGMs, SAMs, radars, mortars etc.
