Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI), as implementing actor under the European Peace Facility (EPF), has signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence of Moldova and the Czech defence company ERA for the procurement of a passive radar system. This will significantly improve Moldova’s air defence and air surveillance capabilities. The radar system is being procured for Moldova in the framework of an aid package funded by the European Union through the European Peace Facility (EPF), aimed at enhancing Moldova’s security, stability, and resilience in the defence sector.

On this occasion, Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi expressed his gratitude to EU partners for their ongoing assistance, which contributes to strengthening their defence capabilities. He noted that such projects will continue for the benefit of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. “Our partners have repeatedly demonstrated their support for us through consistent and continuous assistance in implementing democratic reforms, pursuing the European course, and modernizing the National Army, showing that they stand with us. I would like to thank all our external partners for their openness to our requests and for their assistance in enhancing the country’s defence capabilities. We will continue our collaborative efforts in this regard to maintain a stable and safe environment for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” said Defence Minister Nosatîi.

“All European Union projects under the EPF aimed at Moldova support the development of resilience in the defence sphere and increase cooperation between us. As the implementer of this project, we are pleased that we can contribute our experience and knowledge in procuring air surveillance and communication systems, armoured vehicles, and various combat vehicles,” said Magnus-Valdemar Saar, Director General of Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI).

The European Union has been supporting the Moldovan Armed Forces through the European Peace Facility since 2021 with €128 million allocated so far. The first package of support allocated €7 million and is implemented by the Lithuanian Centre for Project Management. The second package of support amounts to €40 million and is currently being implemented by the ECDI and by the e-Governance Academy (e-GA) in the cyber domain. Last year, a third package of aid measures amounting to €40 million was adopted, with ECDI and e-GA also acting as the implementing actors. The last assistance measure supporting the Armed Forces of Moldova was adopted on 4 April 2024 for a total amount of € 41 million; ECDI will be implementing this measure.
