Hungary’s MH József Kiss 86th Helicopter Brigade has embarked on the retraining process for the H225M helicopter type. Commencing practical flight training on February 28, seasoned pilots with prior expertise on the H145M are now mastering the nuances of this advanced rotorcraft. Marking a substantial milestone, six H225M helicopters have already been commissioned, following the commencement of Hungarian type certification in 2021. This certification process meticulously scrutinized the configuration characteristics to tailor these medium-lift helicopters explicitly to meet the requirements of the Hungarian Defence Forces. The primary mission of the H225M fleet will involve troop and cargo airlift operations, complementing the existing medium transport helicopters, which are set to undergo further development. Internationally recognized and deployed by various nations, including France, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kuwait, Singapore, and Thailand, the H225M stands as a force multiplier.
The H225M, a long-range tactical transport military helicopter developed from the Eurocopter AS532 Cougar, stands as a true multi-purpose asset, enabling military forces to deploy globally. Operating seamlessly in diverse conditions, including icing, this helicopter boasts an all-weather capability supported by night vision goggle compatibility. With a remarkable 700 nautical mile range, extendable through air-to-air or hover in-flight refueling, the H225M has proven its reliability in combat zones and crisis areas worldwide. These aircraft are poised to be deployed against soft-skinned combat vehicles and in support of special operations forces. Hungary’s adoption of this advanced military asset represents a strategic move to enhance its defense capabilities and contribute to the global network of H225M operators.
Originating from the EC725 Caracal designation for the French Air Force’s Combat Search and Rescue missions, the H225M has now received the H-Force weapon system to align with Hungarian military needs. Going beyond traditional transport capabilities, a strategic integration of onboard weapon systems enhances the versatility of the H225M helicopters. Equipped with advanced avionics and communication systems, the H225M reduces crew workload while enhancing mission capability and safety. Powered by two potent Makila 2A1 turboshaft engines, the helicopter’s innovative features, such as the Spheriflex rotor design, contribute to lower maintenance requirements. The four-axis dual-duplex automatic flight control system ensures precision and stability, even in challenging scenarios. Reinforced structural mainframes, high energy-absorbing landing gear, and self-sealing, crashworthy fuel tanks underscore the H225M’s design focus on high survivability.
