The Ghana Air Force, in collaboration with Embraer Defence and Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), recently hosted an impressive display of the A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft at the Air Force Base Accra. The event, held on February 19, 2024, aimed to underscore the aircraft’s adaptability in both training and combat roles, particularly in close air support and aerial reconnaissance missions. The A-29 Super Tucano, renowned for its durability and versatility, boasts a potent turboprop arrangement, making it a formidable asset for Ghana’s defense capabilities. Currently in the process of acquisition from Embraer at a cost of $52.8 million, the aircraft represents a significant investment by Ghana to enhance its military readiness.

Speaking at the event, Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), highlighted the critical importance of acquiring such light attack aircraft in countering emerging terrorism threats. He commended the partnership with SNC and Embraer as a timely step towards strengthening Ghana’s defensive and offensive capabilities, particularly in light of regional instability, such as that witnessed in the Sahel region. Representatives from SNC and Embraer, Mr. Eric Hauff and Mr. Arnold Sobrero, expressed their organizations’ enthusiasm for the collaborative effort, emphasizing its alignment with their long-term cooperation goals.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the aerial display, featuring impressive flypasts and maneuvering drills, allowing attendees to witness firsthand the capabilities of the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft. Prior to the airborne showcase, visitors had the opportunity to explore the static display, gaining insight into the aircraft’s advanced features. This demonstration comes at a time when neighboring Nigeria recently inducted the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft acquired through the US Foreign Military Sales program, marking a significant milestone in bolstering Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.

The Embraer A-29 Super Tucano (EMB 314 Super Tucano) is a Brazilian turboprop light attack aircraft designed and built by Embraer as a development of the Embraer EMB 312 Tucano. The A-29 Super Tucano carries a wide variety of weapons, including precision-guided munitions, and was designed to be a low-cost system operated in low-threat environments. In addition to its manufacture in Brazil, Embraer has set up a production line in the United States in conjunction with Sierra Nevada Corporation for the manufacture of A-29s to export customers. In April 2023, the manufacturer announced the A-29N, a variant intended for NATO nations. The A-29N will include NATO-required equipment, data link communications and be fitted for single-pilot operation.
