Slovakia has embarked on the transfer of technology for producing Patria AMV (Armored Modular Vehicle) XP 8×8 armored vehicles. Spearheaded by the Slovak company CSM Industry, this initiative marks a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance its armored vehicle inventory. Under the guidance of experts from Patria, CSM Industry has commenced the manufacturing process for the first vehicle at its facility in Tisovec. This endeavor underscores Slovakia’s commitment to self-reliance in defense production, with the facility poised to become a cornerstone in the nation’s defense industry landscape.
The collaboration between Slovakia and Finland, encapsulated in a comprehensive deal, encompasses the production of 76 armored combat vehicles as part of the BOV 8×8 program. The contract, inked in August 2022, solidifies Slovakia’s pursuit of NATO commitments while fortifying its domestic defense capabilities. Scheduled for delivery by 2027, the Patria AMV XP transporters will feature cutting-edge technology, including the remote-controlled Slovak Turra 30 turret and the formidable 30mm GTS-30/A cannon. The remotely operated weapon system also includes a SPIKE LR/LR-2 anti-tank guided set, a 7.62 mm machine gun of the FN MAG or PKT type, and smoke grenades of the GALIX or HOLE type.
Central to the AMV’s appeal is its modular design, facilitating seamless integration of different turrets, weapons, and communication systems. With exemplary mine protection capabilities and robust armor, the AMV ensures heightened survivability in challenging environments, underscoring its suitability for modern battlefield scenarios. Slovakia’s endeavor embodies a broader vision of industrial collaboration, with over 40 Slovak companies poised to contribute to the project. This initiative not only augments defense capabilities but also fosters economic growth and technological advancement within Slovakia.
The Patria AMV is an 8×8 multi-role military vehicle produced by the Finnish defence industry company Patria. Designs exist for different APC (armoured personnel carrier) and IFV (infantry fighting vehicle), communications versions, ambulances and different fire support versions, armed with large caliber mortar and gun systems. The vehicle has a very good level of mine protection and can withstand explosions of up to 10 kilograms (22 lb) TNT. The AMV has protection levels up to 30 mm APFSDS frontal arc. Another important feature is the very good mobility, combining speed, agility, and crew comfort in rough terrain, enabled by the sophisticated but rugged hydropneumatic suspension adjusting each wheel individually.
