Indonesian Army Deploys New Indigenous Surveillance Radar System

The Indonesian Army has achieved a significant milestone in its defense capabilities with the successful development of a new Surveillance Radar system capable of detecting unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, and fighter jets. Through a collaborative effort initiated in 2017 between the Army’s Center for Air Defense Artillery (Pussenarhanud) and PT Radar Telekomunikasi Indonesia (RTI), this radar system has been meticulously crafted. The resultant radar boasts an impressive coverage radius of up to 100 kilometers and can effectively detect up to 30 targets flying at altitudes of 8 kilometers.

Boasting a domestic component ratio exceeding 60 percent, this radar system is also seamlessly integrated with the 57mm S-60 single barrel 57mm anti-aircraft gun. This integration aims to foster a cohesive defense fusion between the Surveillance Radar and the 57mm anti-aircraft gun. Despite the Russian-made S-60 being in Indonesia since the 1960s, their maintenance remains exceptional. The production of spare parts is an in-house affair, ensuring the continued operational efficiency of these cannons. Moreover, the indigenous production of 57mm ammunition by PT Pindad underscores the self-sufficiency in sustaining this artillery.

The substantial quantity of these cannons, numbering in the hundreds, continues to assert their relevance and utilization within the TNI AD’s Arhanud division. Divided into two categories, the S-60 57mm Retrofit and the S-60 TAKT (Without Fire Control Equipment), these cannons have undergone significant modifications. These enhancements enable electric mobility through Local Control, drawing power from available batteries, and Remote Control operated via the fire-control system. This stride in radar technology and the seamless integration with the established S-60 cannon system reinforces Indonesia’s commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure.
