Turkey’s Havelsan-developed BARKAN-2 Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) equipped with a Hydrogen Propulsion System has achieved a global first by successfully firing various types of ammunition and multiple projectiles from a single turret. This achievement comes on the heels of the recent successful launch of the Roketsan METE Laser Guided Missile from the HAVELSAN BARKAN-1 UGV. The recent test marks a significant milestone in military technology, as the BARKAN-2 UGV showcases its ability to launch a diverse range of ammunition without the need for explosive materials during launch. Developed by Gürbag Defence, the UGV’s Hydro-Launch system, powered by hydrogen alone, eliminates the risks associated with traditional “hard-launch” and “cold-launch” methods, such as potential explosions due to pyrotechnic gases, ammunition flight engine failures, heat-related platform damage, and sensor disruptions during firing.

On October 12, during a mission covering a 2 to 15-kilometer radius, HAVELSAN demonstrated the BARKAN-2’s groundbreaking capabilities by firing a kamikaze ammunition from the UGV for the first time. The system is equipped with two launchers connected to a single turret, with one launcher being a laser-guided system and the other deploying loitering ammunition. This achievement is a pioneering breakthrough on the international stage, showcasing the UGV’s capability to launch various ammunition types and multiple projectiles with precision. The kamikaze ammunition fired from the BARKAN-2 boasts an impressive range of up to 15 kilometers, thanks to its electric propulsion system. It also reaches a flight altitude of 3,000 meters and offers an astonishing airtime of 40 minutes.

The METE, a laser-guided mini missile system developed by ROKETSAN, can be launched using next-generation 40-millimeter grenade launchers and presents a significant advancement over the existing range of conventional grenade launcher ammunition. With a diameter of 40 mm and a length of approximately 50 cm, it is a lightweight munition, weighing just around 1.4 kg. Despite its small size, the METE missile boasts an impressive maximum range of over 1,000 meters. Its guidance method relies on a Laser Seeker, which ensures precision and target tracking, resulting in a remarkable 1-meter Circular Error Probability (CEP). This system has been implemented to enhance the effectiveness of security forces in urban warfare environments, countering threats such as snipers, mass targets, and reinforcement forces.

The BARKAN-2 UGV, equipped with the Hydro-Launch system, marks a significant advancement in military technology, providing a safer and more versatile alternative for launching ammunition.
