Elbit Systems, ISTAR & EW division has successfully delivered ‘MAY’, the wide-area acoustic sniper-detection solution, to a customer in the Asia Pacific region. The system is an integrated solution combining acoustic sensors, EO camera and RADAR to provide terrain dominance for the special operations forces (SOF) teams. ‘MAY’ smart sensing system continuously senses its surroundings and provides real-time analysis of the emanating sounds, using advanced algorithms and capabilities. Within seconds, the system will detect, define and precisely geo-locate enemy fire, automatically providing critical information for combat forces. Developed by Elbit Systems EW and SIGINT Elisra, MAY is based on high-end acoustic sensors which operate interactively within an area of interest. Compact and durable, these fixed-installation sensors sustain long-term, outdoor 24/7 operation using either wired or wireless communications.

“May” excels in this regard by delivering real-time insights to commanders and soldiers within seconds. The system’s unmatched speed in detecting, defining, and geo-locating events such as gunfire, mortars, and RPG launches provides an invaluable advantage. This rapid awareness empowers military units to make informed decisions promptly, leading to enhanced operational effectiveness. “May” goes beyond simple detection by offering an intricate acoustic event classification capability. This encompasses various scenarios, including recognizing voice commands, identifying drones or unmanned aerial systems (UAS) anomalies, and differentiating between different types of acoustic events. This versatility in classification enables armed forces to not only discern potential threats but also gather critical intelligence on enemy activities, thus fostering a holistic understanding of the battlefield.

One of the hallmarks of “May” is its adaptability and versatility. The system is designed to be customer-customizable, allowing armed forces to tailor its functionality to meet specific operational requirements. This flexibility ensures that “May” seamlessly integrates into existing defense infrastructures, enhancing their capabilities without disrupting established protocols. Furthermore, the multi-sensor collaboration of “May” is a testament to its reliability. By eliminating the concept of a single point of failure (SPOF), the system ensures continuous and uninterrupted operation even in the face of adversity. This redundancy safeguards against technical malfunctions or enemy interference, guaranteeing that the flow of crucial information remains consistent.
