The successful launch of INS Vindhyagiri, the sixth stealth frigate of Project 17A (improved Shivalik-class), marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in warship building and strengthens the nation’s commitment to bolstering its maritime security. The launch ceremony, graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries including the Hon’ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, showcased the nation’s indigenous engineering capabilities and the dedication of M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in contributing to the nation’s defense prowess. Vindhyagiri’s descent into the waters of the river Hoogly was a moment of pride and euphoria, witnessed by dignitaries, naval personnel, shipbuilders, and enthusiastic spectators. The launch ceremony symbolized the unity of purpose among the nation’s stakeholders and celebrated the efforts of the team behind the vessel’s creation.

M/s GRSE’s consistent success in partnering with the Indian Navy is demonstrated through the multiple successful conventional launches in the past. Vindhyagiri’s launch is a testament to GRSE’s commitment to delivering high-quality warships and its dedication to upholding the nation’s maritime security. Project 17A Frigates, an advanced class derived from the Project 17 (Shivalik Class) Frigates, feature improved stealth capabilities, advanced weaponry, sensors, and platform management systems. These frigates represent India’s technological prowess in warship design, highlighting the competence of the Warship Design Bureau in crafting cutting-edge vessels for the Indian Navy. This launch underscores the growth of India’s indigenous engineering capabilities, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers, and fostering a robust defense industrial base.

A significant portion of the Project 17A orders, exceeding 75%, has been allocated to indigenous firms, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), aligning with the Government’s vision of ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India). This initiative not only enhances economic development but also generates employment opportunities, stimulates MSME growth, and nurtures ancillary industries within the country. During the launch event, the Hon’ble President of India expressed deep satisfaction and appreciation for the achievements of the Warship Design Bureau and other naval teams, emphasizing their role in achieving self-reliance in warship construction. The President also commended GRSE for its steadfast support, which has enabled the Indian Navy to successfully implement its ship induction plan and emerge as a formidable force in the Indian Ocean Region.

The christening of ‘Vindhyagiri’ was poignantly connected to the mighty mountains it draws its name from. The vessel’s launch signifies unwavering determination, commitment to national security, and a vision of a prosperous and secure future. As Vindhyagiri embarks on its journey, it stands as a powerful testament to India’s resolve to safeguard its interests and promote a safer world. This launch is a reflection of the nation’s determination, showcasing not just the might of Vindhyagiri, but also the strength of unity, self-reliance, and innovation.
