On July 10, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support and the industrial working group Diehl Defence / Nammo AS (ARGE DiNa155mm) signed a framework agreement for the procurement of 155mm artillery ammunition. With Diehl Defence and Nammo, two reliable companies are cooperating which have the necessary knowhow and capacities to supply the German Armed Forces with high-performance artillery ammunition in the long term. Based on this reliability, a corresponding framework agreement was finalized between the contracting parties in open, transparent and cooperative discussions within a very short time. At the same time, it provides the basis for the firmly intended delivery call of initial DiNa155mm lots as well as the procurement of further fuzes.

The DiNa155mm is a range- and precision-designed projectile that meets the artillery capability requirements of conventional tube artillery in the field of effects and, with its modularity, enables reliable and efficient area and pin-point engagement. In addition, the DiNa155mm’s deep intrusion capability – the ability to adapt fuzes with a long screw-in depth, including the ability to use guidance modules with fuzing functions such as the 2DGMArt® – fulfills another core requirement of the artillery and also underscores its future viability. The DiNa155mm projectile is a modern, new generation explosive projectile developed and qualified in Norway, which has been introduced in several countries and has already proven itself in operation.

The fully qualified ammunition is prepared for the use of so-called course correction fuses, and has already demonstrated its operational capability during a mission with the Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000) 155 mm self-propelled howitzer . Diehl plans to produce it in Germany. The two-dimensional course correction fuse (2DGMArt) is a steering module with a firing function, which has been newly developed by Diehl to improve the precision of conventional ammunition. It reduces the system-typical misalignment in longitudinal and lateral direction and thus enables precise and efficient engagement of artillery point targets, as well as small-area targets in spatial depth. As a result, the 2DGMArt fuse contributes to a noticeable reduction in ammunition requirements.

The DiNa155mm provides the German Armed Forces with a modern and future-proof projectile from European production meeting all of Germany’s capability requirements in terms of range, modularity and logistical security of supply. It also offers the possibility of adapting modern fuzes or course correction modules. The importance of artillery and the availability of artillery ammunition in particular is illustrated on a daily basis in the Ukraine war. The demand for artillery ammunition has increased significantly not only in Germany, but in all EU and NATO countries. Therefore, over the next decades, high quantities of 155mm ammunition will be requested for the support of Ukraine, but also for national stockpiling.
