Under the partnership, PT OCWSB Pratama Indonesia has been appointed as an authorised local partner of Rheinmetall Air Defence, and it is cleared to undertake maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on various weapon systems that have been supplied by the company to Indonesia. These include the Oerlikon Skyshield Air Defence System, which is in service with the Indonesian Air Force’s rapid action command, and the Oerlikon Millennium Gun, which is found on the Indonesian Navy’s Martadinata class. Open-source intelligence company Janes reported that Rheinmetall has indicated that it will be able to produce units of the Oerlikon Skyranger mobile ground-based air defence (GBAD) system in-country should it be selected for the Indonesian armed forces anti-air requirements.

The Skyranger Ground Based Air Defence System is a short range air defence turret-system developed Rheinmetall Air Defence AG (formerly Oerlikon). The system primary targets are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), low-flying aircraft, missiles, as well as to fulfill a C-RAM role and it is armed with two short range surface-to-air missiles and a 30 mm KCE-ABM autocannon, which is capable of firing programmable timed fuzed ammunition. The gun turret can be integrated to any wheeled or tracked armoured fighting vehicle (AFV), which capable to carry its 2.5 tonnes. The Skyranger 30 has its own sensor suite, which consist of an AESA radar, IRST and an electrooptical targeting device with IR camera and laser rangefinders. The system is still in development phase, IOC is planned for 2025.

The Skyranger 30 has multiple sensors in order to find, identify and engage the potential targets. The main sensor is the Rheinmetall Italy’s AESA Multi-Mission Radar (AMMR) which provides 360 degrees coverage thanks ot its 5 AESA arrays. The AMMR can track while scan up to 150 targets, with 40 high priority targets. The engagement of the targets is done by an electrooptical sight equipped with thermal imager and laser rangefinders. This S-band radar has the follwoing detection ranges: over 20 km on a 1 m2 RCS air target, over 12 km detection range against hovering helicopters, 10 km against missiles and5 km against RAM targets and micro-UAS.

The main effector of the Skyranger 30 system is the KCE-ABM 30 mm autocannon, which is a derivative of the Viggen fighter jet’s KCA cannon. It is electrically driven and has a cyclic rate of fire 16 rounds per second or 960 rounds per minute. One key element in increasing the kill probability is the ABM round; leveraging the experience acquired with the 35 mm AHEAD Air Burst Technology ammunition the new 30 mm ABM round carries a total of around 162 tungsten cylinders. The type of missile is up to the buyer to decide about, but Mistral, Stinger and SkyKnight are mentioned by Rheinmetall. Rheinmetall’s High Energy Laser (HEL) could be optionally included to the effector package of the Skyranger 30.
