Nigerian Army Receives Ex-Jordanian FV107 Scimitar Reconnaissance Vehicles

The Nigerian Army has taken delivery of an unspecified number of ex-Jordanian FV-107 Scimitar armoured tracked military reconnaissance vehicles. This new acquisition is part of a broader re-equipping of the Nigerian Army’s armoured corps to better handle violent extremism in the region. Military Africa reported that Jordan and Nigeria maintain a strong relationship and cooperation. The Nigerian Army also acquired Type-89 tracked armoured vehicles, NORINCO ST1 105 mm Fire Support Vehicle, VT-4 Main Battle Tank, SH-5 105mm self-propelled Artillery System, and SH-2 122mm self-propelled artillery system from China Defense Company NORINCO.

The FV107 Scimitar is an armoured tracked military reconnaissance vehicle used by the British Army. It was manufactured by Alvis in Coventry. It is very similar to the FV101 Scorpion, but mounts a high-velocity 30 mm L21 RARDEN cannon instead of a 76 mm gun. It was issued to Royal Armoured Corps armoured regiments in the reconnaissance role. Each regiment originally had a close reconnaissance squadron of five troops, each containing eight FV107 Scimitars. Jordan obtained over 175 Scimitars in a 2006 deal that netted the British $20 million. The Scimitar is one of five enhanced Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked), abbreviated CVR(T) family developed in the 1960s.
