Sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT is supplying new radars to the German Armed Forces to modernise their airspace surveillance and build up Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) capabilities. The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has placed an order for the delivery and installation of four long-range radars as part of the “Hughes Air Defence Radar Nachfolgesystem” (HADR NF) programme. Since the threat to Europe from long-range weapons has existed for years, there is agreement among the European countries that a protective shield consisting of their own and NATO systems must be established or expanded.

For this purpose, HENSOLDT has entered into a cooperation in the field of BMD-capable long-range radars with ELTA Systems Ltd, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. (IAI). The HADR NF system operates in the S-band, allowing for more precise target acquisition compared to other systems. Thanks to IAI’s cooperation, the German customer can be supplied with a combination of a national partner for integration, certification and long-term support, as well as market-available systems that have been tried and tested in the field.

Missile defense systems are a type of missile defense intended to shield a country against incoming missiles, such as intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBMs) or other ballistic missiles. The United States, Russia, India, France, Israel, Italy, United Kingdom and China have all developed missile defense systems. The term “Missile defense system” broadly means a system that provides any defense against any missile type (conventional or nuclear). Any mechanism which can detect and then destroy a missile before it can cause any harm is called a missile defence system (MDS).

HENSOLDT is a German champion in the defence industry with a leading market position in Europe and a global reach. Headquartered in Taufkirchen near Munich, Germany, the company develops sensor solutions for defence and security applications. As a technology leader, HENSOLDT also continuously expands its Cyber portfolio and develops new products to combat a wide range of threats based on innovative approaches to data management, robotics and cybersecurity. With more than 5,600 employees, HENSOLDT generated revenues of 1.2 billion euros in 2020. HENSOLDT is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the SDAX stock market index there.
