Saab Inc., East Syracuse, New York, is awarded a $31,711,146 modification (P00004) to a previously awarded contract. This modification exercises an option for the production and delivery of three AN/SPN-50(V) 1 shipboard air traffic radars, and one installation and checkout kit for the U.S. Navy. Work will be performed in Syracuse, New York, and is expected to be completed in December 2022. The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

Saab Defense and Security USA has received an order from the U.S. Navy to provide the AN/SPN-50 (V)1 Shipboard Air Traffic Radar. The first award for the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase of the program includes the initial procurement of three radars over a four-year period. The radar will be deployed to the US Navy’s Aircraft Carrier (CVN)and Amphibious Assault (LH)Class ships, replacing the currently deployed AN/SPN-43C Air Traffic Radar.

The AN/SPN-50 system supports the deployment, sustainment and operation of aviation assets by providing aircraft position, radar signal, and weather data. Air traffic controllers use this data for air traffic control services, such as aircraft sequencing and separation, airspace identification and containment, safety alerts, traffic advisories, and landing guidance. The new radar is being procured to replace the legacy AN/SPN-43C S-band ATC radar.

The AN/SPN-50 system acquisition, deployment and sustainment is managed by Naval Air Systems Command’s Naval Air Traffic Management Systems Program Office. AN/SPN-50(V)1 was demonstrated for the first time October 2019 at Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division Webster Field in St. Inigoes, Maryland, and has since executed numerous test and evaluation events at different locations during the engineering and manufacturing phase.
