Italian defense contractor Applicazioni Rielaborazioni Impianti Speciali (ARIS) SpA has developed an ocean-going amphibious modification kit for the BAE Systems Ground Systems Division M113 series full-tracked armored personnel carrier (APC). While the standard baseline M113 possesses basic amphibious capabilities propelled solely by its tracks up to a maximum speed of 5.8 km/h in calm water, it lacks the seaworthiness required for ocean launches or fast-flowing river crossings. To overcome these operational limits, ARIS engineered a private-venture modification package designated the Arisgator—in service with Italian Navy Landing Forces as the Veicolo Anfibio Leggero (VAL)—enabling secure ship-to-shore transitions from landing platform dock (LPD) vessels even under rough sea conditions.
Constructed entirely of light alloy matching the original vehicle’s hull structure, the kit adds between 1,350 kg and 1,700 kg to the platform while preserving its core mobility on land. Key hydrodynamic modifications include a shaped front bow unit to increase buoyancy and twin stern units positioned flanking the rear power-operated ramp. Each stern unit houses an independent, hydrostatically driven propeller that provides exceptional maneuverability afloat, including the ability to execute axis turns on the water. To ensure continuous operation while submerged in swell, ARIS added a roof-mounted snorkel alongside an extended exhaust pipe and specialized covers over the standard driver-side air intake and outlet grilles.
Despite these extensive modifications, the Arisgator retains core operational features of the original vehicle, including the commander’s cupola, the oblong troop compartment hatch, and the ability to transport eight fully equipped soldiers. The platform maintains compatibility with standard internal equipment and a wide selection of market-available armament or protective upgrades. The modification is certified by the Italian Navy Register (RINA) and military homologated, offering defense forces a low-profile, highly maneuverable amphibious capability that can fulfill standalone littoral missions or supplement larger amphibious assets.
From a procurement perspective, the system presents an economical alternative to acquiring purpose-built amphibious platforms by leveraging existing M113 inventories. The high degree of parts commonality and familiar crew mechanics significantly reduce life-cycle maintenance costs and training burdens, allowing seamless interoperability across standard mechanized infantry formations.
