Saab Receives Order for New Gripen Flight Control Computer

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the development of a new generation flight control computer for Gripen. The order value is SEK 1.3 billion with deliveries planned during 2030. Saab will replace the current version of Gripen’s flight control computer with a future-proof solution designed to meet long-term requirements for availability, performance and security of supply. The project will be carried out in close cooperation with FMV.

“We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with FMV. The new flight control computer will contribute to Gripen’s capability and performance for decades to come,” says Marcus Wandt, head of Saab’s business area Aeronautics.

The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a light single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace and defence company Saab AB. The Gripen has a delta wing and canard configuration with relaxed stability design and fly-by-wire flight controls. Later aircraft are fully NATO interoperable. As of 2025, more than 280 Gripens of all models, A–F, have been delivered. A major redesign of the Gripen series, previously referred to as Gripen NG (Next Generation) or Super JAS, now designated JAS 39E/F Gripen[6] began deliveries to the Swedish Air Force and Brazilian Air Force in 2019.

Saab describes the Gripen as a “swing-role aircraft”, stating that it is capable of “instantly switching between roles at the push of a button”. The human/machine interface changes when switching between roles, being optimized by the computer in response to new situations and threats. The Gripen is also equipped to use a number of different communications standards and systems, including SATURN secure radio, Link 16, ROVER, and satellite uplinks. Equipment for performing long range missions, such as an air-to-air refuelling probe and Onboard Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS), was integrated on the Gripen C/D.
