ThayerMahan has secured a major defense procurement contract to supply 40 Outpost acoustic intelligence payloads and its proprietary TransparenSea processing software suite to the Royal Australian Navy under the SEA1200 program. Founded in 2016 in Connecticut, ThayerMahan specializes in designing, manufacturing, and operating advanced systems for persistent acoustic and electronic information collection across global maritime domains. This strategic acquisition represents a significant expansion of Australia’s capability to collect, analyze, and disseminate critical subsurface intelligence across its broad ocean approaches.
The operational vector for these acoustic payloads will be the Bluebottle uncrewed surface vessel (USV), an indigenously designed Australian platform manufactured by Ocius Technology. Named after the marine organism renowned for drifting along the air-sea interface, the 7.4-meter (24.4-foot) Bluebottle utilizes a patented architecture powered by solar energy, wind, and wave motion, supplemented by a hybrid diesel drive. Built to withstand operating conditions up to Sea State 8 on the Beaufort Scale, the low-observable platform maintains an acoustically quiet signature that is essential for high-fidelity underwater surveillance, launching and recovering easily via standard four-wheel-drive vehicles on boat ramps or shipboard cranes.
In active service with the Royal Australian Navy since July 2024, the Bluebottle platform has demonstrated sustained operational endurance, achieving continuous deployments exceeding six months at sea and accumulating up to 300 operational days annually per unit. Integrating ThayerMahan’s Outpost payloads and TransparenSea software onto these proven USVs ensures continuous, 24/7/365 intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) coverage. The combined architecture addresses long-standing challenges in persistent maritime domain awareness by offering continuous low-observable tracking across expansive and remote ocean stretches without requiring constant crewed oversight.
By integrating these autonomous uncrewed surface vessels into a teamed operational environment alongside existing surface and undersea naval units, Australia is establishing an interoperable suite of force-multiplying defense capabilities.
