German aerospace developer POLARIS Spaceplanes has completed the maiden flight of its COBRA uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) prototype, marking a significant milestone in the company’s dual-use technology roadmap. According to company officials, the initial test flight covered a distance exceeding 20 km along a pre-programmed flight profile, validating core aerodynamic structures and flight-control systems. Additional test sorties are scheduled to take place over the coming months to expand the vehicle’s operational flight envelope, with video footage of the inaugural flight expected to be released shortly.

The COBRA platform, which features a maximum take-off mass (MTOM) exceeding 600 kg, is being developed under a collaborative effort with German defense contractor Diehl Defence within the joint AirLAS (Airborne Launching and Strike System) initiative. Designed as a light uncrewed flight demonstrator, COBRA is intended to serve as a versatile carrier platform, with its primary mission profile focused on integrating and air-launching Diehl’s IRIS-T series of air-to-air missiles for point-defense and air-defense applications.

The vehicle represents a direct spin-off of POLARIS’s core aerospace research, which centers on the development of reusable, delta-wing hypersonic spaceplanes intended to revolutionize satellite launch operations and routine access to space. By leveraging the underlying aerodynamic configurations and structural concepts optimized for high-speed flight, POLARIS is pursuing a parallel defense strategy by deriving downscaled platforms tailored for military requirements.

The integration of kinetic effectors onto scalable, high-performance UAV platforms highlights a growing trend within European defense modernization efforts toward cost-effective, uncrewed defensive architectures. Successful validation of the COBRA flight demonstrator is expected to provide key data for both the AirLAS tactical launcher initiative and the broader maturation of POLARIS’s heavy-payload, high-speed flight program.
