Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer has officially delivered the first two EMB 314 / A-29 Super Tucano turboprop light attack and counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft to the Uruguayan Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya: FAU). The aircraft, bearing temporary Brazilian export registrations PT-BOS and PT-CUM, completed initial acceptance protocols and flight demonstrations at Embraer’s defense production facility before their upcoming ferry flight to Uruguay. The delivery marks the operational kickoff of a contract finalized in July 2024, when Embraer and the Uruguayan Ministry of National Defense announced an acquisition program for up to 11 Super Tucano platforms to spearhead the FAU’s long-delayed fleet renewal. The procurement architecture includes a firm initial acquisition order alongside a structured commitment for five additional units, with rolling deliveries scheduled to continue through late 2025 and into 2026. The comprehensive program encompasses mission-specific sub-systems, an integrated logistics support (ILS) package, and an advanced synthetic training apparatus.
As part of the technological package accompanying the six initial operational airframes, the FAU is set to receive a new, state-of-the-art synthetic flight simulator. The simulator’s cockpit geometry and hardware configuration are engineered to mirror the operational aircraft exactly. According to technical documentation, the avionics suites and software architectures between the real airframes and the simulator are fully interchangeable, allowing direct data synchronization and high-fidelity operational replication. This synthetic training pipeline is intended to provide the FAU with an indigenous capability to qualify front-line pilots, while also positioning Uruguay as a regional training hub for allied Latin American air forces.The FAU’s customized A-29 configuration features an advanced organic armor package, including built-in Kevlar ballistic protection for the cockpit and critical engine compartments. The avionics architecture introduces a next-generation electronic warfare and mission suite that shares strong baseline commonality with the specialized NATO-compliant A-29N variant recently selected by the Portuguese Air Force. Key features include a fully integrated hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) cockpit configuration, a night-vision goggle (NVG) compatible “glass cockpit” layout, a specialized Head-Up Display (HUD), encrypted tactical data-links, a radio altimeter, and a laser rangefinder for high-accuracy tactical routing and ballistic calculations.
The arrival of the A-29 Super Tucano represents a critical leap in capabilities for the FAU, which has suffered from acute operational degradation following the retirement of its IA-58 Pucará fleet and the obsolescence of its OA-37B Dragonfly platforms. The integration of the L3Harris Wescam MX-15 electro-optical sensor transforms the FAU’s role from basic border policing to modern, data-driven ISR. Furthermore, the selection of an electronics suite mimicking Portugal’s NATO-standard A-29N signals an emphasis on interoperability and network-centric operations, a growing trend among South American militaries addressing cross-border illicit trafficking networks. To support advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations, the Uruguayan platforms are being integrated with the L3Harris Wescam MX-15 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) turreted sensor system. The initial implementation involves one operational turret, with defense ministry sources confirming budgetary planning to acquire at least one additional MX-15 system to ensure rotation and fleet availability during sustained border surveillance deployments. The aircraft’s structural design is engineered to withstand high g-loads and features a reinforced landing gear configuration optimized for rough-field, austere airstrip operations, supporting a maximum takeoff weight and external stores payload of up to 1,550 kg (3,420 lb). Internal organic armament consists of two wing-mounted .50 caliber heavy machine guns equipped with 200 rounds of ammunition per gun.
For extended combat capabilities, the A-29 features five weapon hardpoints—consisting of one centerline and four underwing stations—capable of deploying a highly diversified ordnance inventory that includes 20 mm Giat NC621 cannon pods, Mk 81 and Mk 82 general-purpose bombs, laser-guided precision munitions, SBAT-70/19 or LAU-68A/G rocket launchers, and short-range air-to-air missiles like the MAA-1 Piranha designed for self-defense or low-speed aerial interception. To ensure long-term operational durability, the airframe’s external finish includes a specialized anti-corrosion treatment to mitigate coastal operational degradation, while the side-hinged canopy is built with a reinforced windshield rated to withstand bird strikes at speeds up to 270 knots. Furthermore, crew survivability is significantly enhanced via twin zero-zero ejection seats. According to Embraer, this delivery successfully positions the Uruguayan Air Force as the latest of 22 global nations utilizing the versatile A-29 platform to fulfill integrated light attack missions, advanced pilot training, and critical border security requirements.
