The Malian Army have reportedly taken delivery of a new batch of Chinese-supplied military equipment, including the Yitian-L short-range air defense system. Visual evidence circulating on social media, including footage published by local blogger Beki Take, shows multiple systems being transported along roadways in Mali as part of a military convoy. At least three Yitian-L units were identified in the convoy. The system is mounted on a Dongfeng Mengshi high-mobility military vehicle, providing a mobile and flexible air defense capability tailored for rapid deployment in diverse operational environments. The Yitian-L system integrates a compact turret featuring a roof-mounted target acquisition radar and four vertical launch containers for TY-90 short-range surface-to-air missiles. Originally developed as an air-to-air missile, the TY-90 has been adapted for ground-based air defense roles. It offers an engagement range of approximately 500 m to 6 km and can intercept targets at altitudes between 15 m and 4 km.
According to China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), the Yitian system is optimized for operations in complex terrain and urban environments, where mobility, compactness, and rapid response are critical. The system is operated by a two-person crew and incorporates a digital fire control interface with joystick-based controls, reducing training requirements and enabling effective operation under high-stress conditions. Mali joins a small but growing number of African operators of the Yitian-L system. Prior deliveries have been reported to Mauritania, indicating an expanding Chinese footprint in the region’s short-range air defense market. The TY-90 missile, also known as Tian Yan-90, was developed by China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CPMIEC).

Measuring approximately 1.86 m in length and weighing around 20 kg, the missile is designed for integration on rotary-wing platforms and unmanned aerial vehicles, while retaining high agility and precision in intercepting aerial threats. Powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor, the TY-90 provides consistent propulsion and is capable of engaging targets at distances up to 6 km and altitudes reaching 6,000 m. Its compact design and all-aspect engagement capability make it particularly effective against fast-moving, low-altitude threats, including helicopters and UAVs. The Yitian-L is further equipped with an advanced fire control system, incorporating computerized targeting, multi-mode engagement options, and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) technology. This enables accurate target discrimination and engagement in both line-of-sight and beyond-visual-range scenarios, while minimizing the risk of fratricide.
In terms of survivability, the Yitian-L platform features armored protection, as well as nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) defense systems. Additional protective measures include smoke grenade launchers and an automatic fire suppression system, enhancing crew safety and operational resilience in contested environments. A key enabler of the system’s performance is its integrated radar suite, typically based on a 3D X-band radar capable of detecting, tracking, and prioritizing multiple aerial targets simultaneously. This sensor feeds real-time data to the fire control system, allowing for rapid reaction times and coordinated missile launches. Overall, the introduction of the Yitian-L system provides Mali with a mobile and modern short-range air defense capability, improving its ability to counter a range of aerial threats, particularly in low-altitude and asymmetric warfare scenarios.
