With cybersecurity as one of the pillars safeguarding data security and strengthening national defense, UNHAN RI and Thales signed an Implement Arrangement on 24th February 2026 to kickstart its collaboration to build local cybersecurity expertise. The Implementing Arrangement was signed in Jakarta by Lieutenant General (Ret.), Dr. Anton Nugroho, Rector at UNHAN RI, and Mr. Nicolas Bouverot, Thales Vice-President for Asia. Between January to July 2025, Indonesia’s State Cyber and Cryptography Agency (BSSN) recorded 3.64 billion cyberattacks or traffic anomalies in the archipelago. If targeted at critical infrastructure, government operations or miliary systems, these attacks have the capacity to significantly threaten national security, disrupt essential services and create economic instability.
Operated by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, UNHAN RI educates and trains Indonesian military and civilian officials, particularly in areas related to national defense, security and military science. The prevalence of cyberattacks in Indonesia on public and private institutions has prompted UNHAN RI to offer specific graduate and post-graduate education in the field of cyber defense. Thales has over 6000 cybersecurity experts and developers worldwide, including a dedicated team in Indonesia, offering solutions that bring security, trust and resilience to key sectors and critical infrastructure. Present in Indonesia for over 45 years, the new collaboration with UNHAN RI reinforces Thales’ commitment to build local capabilities, enhance human capital and develop cyber literacy in one of the world’s fastest growing digital economies. The first training cohort will be jointly selected by UNHAN RI and Thales, with the program estimated to kick off in Q2 2026.
“Over the past 45 years, Thales has been deepening its local defense footprint in Indonesia with critical systems supplied and maintained with the Indonesian National Armed Forces. An essential pillar of Indonesia’s sovereignty lies in cyber defense. This is Thales’ first agreement with a major Indonesian university, and it represents a commitment from Thales to train and nurture the next generation of cybersecurity talents that can help safeguard the country’s defenses. We hope that this can be a model for future academic partnerships across broader topics to come,” Nicolas Bouverot, Thales Vice-President for Asia said.
“Universitas Pertahanan RI is committed to preparing future defence leaders who are adaptive, technologically capable, and ready to respond to evolving security challenges. We believe that collaboration with strategic partners such as Thales will significantly contribute to this mission,” Lieutenant General (Ret.), Dr. Anton Nugroho, Rector at UNHAN RI said.
