Lockheed Martin’s Radar Center of Excellence has delivered its 500th ground based radar, a Q-53 radar system, marking a significant achievement in the company’s legacy of providing a portfolio of advanced radar systems to customers around the world. AN/TPQ-53 Quick Reaction Capability Radar is a mobile active electronically scanned array counter-battery radar system manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The radar is specifically designed to locate the firing positions of both rocket and mortar launchers. It has a maximum detection range of 38 mi (61 km) and has an operating frequency of 2–4 GHz (15.0–7.5 cm). In accordance with the Joint Electronics Type Designation System (JETDS), the “AN/TPQ-53” designation represents the 53rd design of an Army-Navy electronic device for ground transportable special combination radar system. The JETDS system also now is used to name all Department of Defense electronic systems.
“This milestone reflects our long history of delivering radar capabilities that are transforming the way our customers detect and respond to emerging threats. We’re proud to be at the forefront of radar innovation that is making a real difference in the field.” said Rick Cordaro, Vice president of Lockheed Martin Radar and Sensor Systems.

Threat deterrence always begins with detection. Ground based radars play a crucial role in missile defense systems, as they are the primary means of detecting, tracking, and identifying incoming ballistic missiles, providing essential information that enables a timely interception and response to neutralize threats; essentially acting as the “eyes” and “shield” of a layered missile defense system. With broad and deep experience developing and delivering advanced radar solutions to customers, Lockheed Martin’s high-performing, highly reliable radar systems specialize in providing advanced early warning, counter target acquisition, situational awareness, and integrated air and missile defense. From the front lines’ perspective, our radars give the joint force an unprecedented advantage against any adversary and enables them to execute their mission and come home safely.
