The Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG) has reinforced its maritime capabilities with the recent addition of its third Hamilton-class cutter, formerly the USCGC Mellon. This marks Vietnam as one of the largest operators of Hamilton-class vessels globally, signaling a significant upgrade to its patrol and enforcement capabilities in regional waters. Vietnam’s acquisition of Hamilton-class cutters began in 2017 with the transfer of the ex-USCGC Morgenthau, which was renamed CSB-8020 upon entering the VCG. This was followed in 2020 by the transfer of the ex-USCGC John Midgett, designated CB-8121. The latest addition, the ex-USCGC Mellon, entered Vietnam’s fleet in 2023 and now operates as CB-8022, adopting the VCG’s distinct white-and-blue livery.

The Hamilton-class cutters were a cornerstone of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) fleet until their replacement by the Legend-class cutters. Constructed at Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans, the Hamilton-class vessels are renowned for their robust design, featuring welded steel hulls and aluminum superstructures optimized for durability and survivability. Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, these cutters offer flexibility in operations, with cruising speeds of 17–19 knots on diesel engines and a maximum speed of 29 knots on gas turbines. Their advanced propulsion design, which includes a retractable bow thruster for precise maneuvering, enhances their operational versatility in confined or shallow waters.

The Hamilton-class is equipped with modern habitability features, such as air-conditioned living spaces, to support extended missions. Their advanced engineering includes Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines, a reliable power source widely used across marine and industrial applications. The vessels also house three auxiliary power generators and can produce up to 7,500 gallons of freshwater daily. With a fuel capacity of 732 tons of diesel and aviation fuel reserves for onboard helicopters, these cutters are designed for extended patrols, making them an ideal choice for the VCG’s operational demands.

Vietnam’s acquisition of three Hamilton-class cutters enhances its ability to patrol its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and enforce maritime laws effectively. These vessels also bolster Vietnam’s position as a key regional maritime power, equipped to address challenges such as illegal fishing, smuggling, and natural disaster response. As Vietnam continues to modernize its coast guard fleet, the Hamilton-class cutters represent a significant leap in capability, providing a versatile platform for multi-mission operations in an increasingly contested maritime environment. The arrival of CB-8022 underscores Vietnam’s commitment to enhancing its maritime law enforcement, search-and-rescue operations, and sovereignty protection, especially in the contentious South China Sea.
