Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk, FMV) for ten combat boats. The order value is approximately SEK 400 million. The contract period begins in 2024 and deliveries will be made continuously over the coming years. The boats are based on the CB90 Next Generation design and are manufactured by Saab’s shipyard in Docksta. The CB90 is a class of fast military assault craft used by several countries after being originally developed for the Swedish Navy by Dockstavarvet. Since 2017 Dockstavarvet AB is a part of SAAB AB. The CB90 is an exceptionally fast and agile boat that can execute extremely sharp turns at high speed, decelerate from top speed to a full stop in 2.5 boat lengths, and adjust both its pitch and roll angle while under way.

“Combat boats are advanced platforms that can be used for many different types of missions. We are proud that Saab’s naval capabilities continue to contribute to Sweden’s defence,” says Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s business area Kockums.

The CB90 (Stridsbåt 90 H(alv); Strb 90 H) refers to the year of acceptance (1990) and Half refers to the fact that it can carry and deploy a half platoon of amphibious infantry (18 men) fully equipped. Its low weight, shallow draught, and twin water jets allow it to operate at speeds of up to 40 knots (74 km/h) in shallow coastal waters. The water jets are partially ducted, which, along with underwater control surfaces similar to a submarine’s diving planes, gives the CB90 its manoeuvrability. A total of 165 boats in service, including 18 CB90 HSM. 10 boats will be delivered to Ukraine.

This CB90 Next Generation (CB90 NG) features new capabilities as well as many of the features that the original CB90 is famous for. Designed to swiftly transport marines and other forces, CB90 is renowned for the ease by which troops can rapidly get on-shore and depart again, be it a beach or an awkward, elevated rocky shore. CB90 NG builds on that capability and, depending on the mission, can take on different roles in the sensor and combat chain. CB90 NG includes a new combat management system and sensors for surveillance, ballistic protection, as well as further improved stealth, manoeuvrability and speed. By providing amphibious forces with multi-mission capabilities, CB90 NG is an even more potent means by which to project force from the sea.
