Colt Canada, a subsidiary of Colt CZ Group, introduced the C8A4 variant of its renowned C8 carbine at the CANSEC 2024 exhibition. The Colt Canada C7 and C8 are a Canadian family of service rifles, manufactured by Colt Canada. This new model is being considered as a potential future configuration for the Canadian Armed Forces under the Canadian Modular Assault Rifle (CMAR) project. The C8A4, an evolution of Colt Canada’s Modular Rail Rifle (MRR), incorporates the trusted internal components of the C8 carbine within an AR-15 architecture chambered in 5.56mm x 45mm NATO caliber. This new iteration features the M-Lok rail system, enhancing modularity and customization capabilities. It operates using a direct gas impingement system complemented by an enhanced gas block, ensuring reliable performance in diverse combat scenarios.
One of the standout features of the C8A4 is its robust monolithic upper casing, which includes a long STANAG 4694 rail on top and M-Lok side interfaces with five mounting slots. This design facilitates the economical attachment of various optics and accessories, ensuring improved weight distribution and operational efficiency. Additionally, the rifle is equipped with a single-stage non-adjustable combat trigger, emphasizing simplicity and reliability. Durability and longevity are key considerations in the C8A4’s design. The 295 mm cold-hammer forged chrome-lined barrel is free-floating, contributing to a longer lifespan and enhanced accuracy. The carbine’s aluminum casing is coated with a sand-colored Cerakote finish, matching the Magpul MOE grip and adjustable Magpul CTR stock, which are also in this tactical color.
The C8A4 variant showcased at CANSEC 2024 was fitted with a SAI Optics SAI 6 patrol scope and a Huxwrx suppressor, aligning with modern operational requirements. This setup is reminiscent of the British L403A1, highlighting a shared vision of adaptable and advanced infantry weaponry. Weighing approximately 2.8 kilograms unloaded and 3.4 kilograms when loaded, the C8A4 balances lightness with robustness. The firearm extends to 0.84 meters with the buttstock extended and retracts to 0.76 meters with the buttstock collapsed, offering versatility for various tactical situations. Its 368 mm barrel is designed for precision shooting and long-term durability. With an adjustable rate of fire ranging from 700 to 940 rounds per minute and an impressive initial velocity of 900 meters per second, the rifle is capable of delivering maximum ballistic efficiency over distances up to 400 meters.
