The Dutch Ministry of Defence has recently announced a strategic move in support of Ukraine’s military capabilities. According to official reports, the Netherlands has finalized an order for the latest DITA self-propelled howitzers from the Czech Republic, with intentions to deliver them to Ukraine. Netherlands’ commitment to aiding Ukraine is underscored by their recent procurement of nine DITA units, part of a larger order aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities. This procurement initiative is facilitated through collaboration with Czech arms manufacturers, a testament to the importance of strategic partnerships in bolstering Europe’s collective defense production capacity.
The DITA self-propelled howitzer represents a significant advancement in modern artillery systems, boasting the capability to accurately target locations dozens of kilometers away. With Ukraine facing urgent needs for such weaponry, the acquisition of these units is deemed crucial. During a recent visit to the Czech Republic, Netherlands Chief of Defence, General Onno Eichelsheim, personally oversaw the progress of the order, emphasizing the unwavering support extended to Ukraine by the Netherlands. General Eichelsheim also took the opportunity to inspect the VERA-NG radar system, highlighting the comprehensive nature of European collaboration in addressing security challenges.
The DITA self-propelled howitzer represents a significant leap forward in artillery technology. Developed by Excalibur Army, it builds upon the success of the DANA M2, incorporating a highly automated turret for enhanced efficiency and precision. The DITA features a unique turreted layout on a wheeled chassis, a design innovation with roots tracing back to the former Czechoslovakia’s DANA artillery system of the 1980s. Equipped with a 155mm/L45 ordnance, the DITA boasts a maximum firing range of 39 kilometers with base bleed projectiles, and precision ammunition enables targeting of locations up to 50 kilometers away. With a maximum rate of fire of 6 rounds per minute and a sustained rate of fire of 5 rounds per minute, the DITA ensures rapid response capabilities in combat scenarios.
Despite its formidable firepower, the artillery system prioritizes crew safety with an armored cab, though protection is primarily against small arms fire and shell fragments. The DITA’s advanced automation features, including automatic ammunition loading, navigation, and gun laying systems, contribute to its efficient operation by a minimal crew of two—a driver and a vehicle commander. Additionally, a third crew member workstation is available in the turret for emergency manual operation. Unlike truck-mounted howitzers, the DITA utilizes a purpose-built wheeled chassis, powered by a Tatra T3C-928-90 turbocharged diesel engine generating 400 horsepower. This specialized design enables the DITA to traverse challenging terrains with ease, further enhancing its operational flexibility and effectiveness.
