Singapore’s ST Engineering (STE) has made significant strides in its research and development of hybrid electric drive (HED), as evidenced by the unveiling of a mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicle at the Singapore Airshow 2024. The showcased vehicle, the 4×4 Next Generation Protected Vehicle (NGPV), represents a culmination of STE’s innovative efforts and commitment to advancing military mobility and sustainability. Executives from ST Engineering revealed that the design and prototyping of the NGPV were accomplished in a remarkably short span of 10 months, from April 2022 to January 2023. This accelerated timeline, made possible through digital modeling and simulation, underscores STE’s agility and proficiency in vehicle development, especially considering that similar projects typically take 18 to 24 months.
Drawing inspiration from the Paramount Marauder MRAP, known as the Belrex in the Singapore Army, the NGPV builds upon proven design elements while incorporating cutting-edge technologies. STE’s collaboration with Paramount in 2018 facilitated the international marketing of the Belrex, laying the groundwork for the NGPV’s evolution. The NGPV’s hybrid electric drive system offers numerous advantages over conventional propulsion, including silent mobility during the ‘last-mile’ approach and extended mission duration with the ability to run equipment without the engine. Additionally, it boasts increased operational range and the capacity to provide power for charging equipment and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), enhancing overall mission flexibility and sustainability.
Designed to support a wide array of missions, ranging from law enforcement and peacekeeping to homeland security and armed conflict, the NGPV serves as a versatile platform adaptable to various configurations. Its fully digitized architecture, anchored by a robust monocoque V-shaped hull, ensures enhanced crew survivability against ballistic, mine, and improvised explosive device (IED) threats. Powered by a rugged Cummins engine and Allison transmission, the NGPV delivers high mobility essential for maneuvering in diverse and challenging terrains. Whether deployed for troop transport or specialized roles such as medical evacuation or mortar support, the NGPV embodies ST Engineering’s commitment to delivering advanced, mission-ready vehicles tailored to the evolving needs of modern defense and security operations.
