Malaysian Defence Ministry Seeks Major Upgrade with Instalaza C90 Light Anti-Tank Weapon Acquisition

The Malaysian Defence Ministry has issued a call for bids to procure 780 units of the Instalaza C90 Light Anti-Tank Weapon (LAW) from Spain, marking one of the most significant anti-tank weapon acquisitions in recent history. Published on January 30, the tender will remain open until February 20, allowing interested companies a 21-day window to submit their proposals. According to Malaysian Defence, the Infantry Battalion aims to equip its personnel with a Light Anti-tank Weapon Disposable System. The system’s primary purposes include the destruction of light armored vehicles, gun emplacements, pillboxes, concrete bunkers, and similar hard targets. Emphasizing mobility, the weapon must be easily transportable by infantry personnel across sea, air, and land deployments, supporting both offensive and defensive operations.

Interestingly, previous displays of disposable launch tubes for the C90 have been primarily associated with units like the Army special forces GGK and the 19th Royal Malay Regiment (RMR), while the M72 LAW, procured from Nammo, has been observed with the Pathfinder company of the 10th Para Brigade and the GGK. Despite assumptions that the proliferation of RPGs within infantry units might render the C90 obsolete, the substantial procurement suggests otherwise. Consequently, units like those within the 10th Para Brigade are expected to transition to the C90 upon delivery, optimizing both effectiveness and cost-efficiency. the acquisition of the Instalaza C90 Light Anti-Tank Weapon represents a significant step forward for the Malaysian Armed Forces, enhancing their capabilities in modern warfare scenarios while ensuring adaptability to evolving threats.

The Instalaza C90 LAW is a 90mm disposable, shoulder-fired, and one-man-operated rocket-propelled grenade launcher renowned for its lightweight design and versatility. Fitted with a VN38-C night vision device, it offers full night combat capability, making it an invaluable asset for infantry operations. The C90 family comprises various systems tailored for different combat scenarios, including anti-tank, anti-bunker, dual-purpose, smoke, and enhanced blast munitions, ensuring adaptability across diverse environments. The system integrates advanced optics and firing mechanisms into its disposable launching tube, enhancing operational efficiency and accuracy. With optional night vision devices such as the VN38-C and VN-IR, soldiers can swiftly adapt to low-light conditions without compromising situational awareness. Additionally, training systems like the TR90-BT subcaliber trainer and the SAARA simulated trainer facilitate proficiency development and mission readiness.
