The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces of has secured a deal with Otokar, a prominent Turkish defense manufacturer, to acquire 200 Cobra II armored vehicles. This strategic procurement, valued at approximately USD 136 million, was officially announced by Otokar on December 14, 2023. The comprehensive contract encompasses the delivery of vehicles, spare parts, maintenance tools, and training services. Scheduled to commence by the end of 2024, the phased deliveries will continue into the following year. Otokar’s success with the Cobra II extends beyond Morocco, with previous orders received from undisclosed customers and the Turkish Armed Forces. In late 2015, a significant order for 82 Cobra II vehicles was placed, followed by another order in June 2016 for an undisclosed quantity worth $120.8 million.

The Cobra II, an evolved version of its predecessor, is a 4×4 wheeled armored vehicle designed and produced by Otokar. With a capacity for nine personnel, including the driver and commander, it boasts a high level of protection against improvised explosive devices and landmines. This tactical personnel carrier serves a multitude of functions, including security and peacekeeping operations, as well as border protection. Its modular design allows for customization according to the specific security requirements of the user. Originally unveiled at IDEF 2013, the Cobra II has demonstrated its effectiveness in various roles, serving both the Turkish Armed Forces and security forces. Additionally, it has been utilized by several other countries and employed by the United Nations in peacekeeping missions.

The Cobra II measures 5.6 meters in length, 2.5 meters in width, and 2.2 meters in height, featuring standard equipment such as run-flat tires, a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), air conditioning, blackout lighting, and a towing eye. Additional optional features include a self-recovery winch, a CBRN filtration kit, automatic fire extinguishing system, navigation system, intercom system, and an auxiliary power unit. The vehicle can also be equipped with a remote-controlled weapon system (RCWS), housing up to a 30 mm machine gun or grenade launcher. The Cobra II is powered by a 6.7L, six-cylinder, water-cooled, turbocharged, common rail diesel engine, coupled with an automatic gearbox. Generating 360 hp at 2,650 rpm and a torque of 1100 Nm at 1,400 rpm, the engine is compatible with F-34 and F-54 fuel. With a maximum speed of 110 km/h and an operational range of 700 km, the vehicle offers a robust and reliable performance.
