The recent delivery of 26 Dana M2 self-propelled artillery systems from the Czech Republic to Ukraine marks a significant stride in enhancing the latter’s defense capabilities amid ongoing security challenges. This move, initiated in April 2022, demonstrates a proactive step by Ukraine to fortify its Army, particularly its artillery units, with modernized weaponry. The Dana M2, renowned for its adaptability and reliability, represents a pivotal addition to Ukraine’s military arsenal. Designed by Konstrukta Trencin and built by ZTS Dubnica nad Vahom, this wheeled self-propelled artillery piece has gained recognition for its versatility since its introduction in the 1970s. In late April – early May 2021 152-mm Dana-M2 self-propelled gun from the Czech company Excalibur Army passed functional tests in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

One of the compelling factors behind Ukraine’s selection of the Dana M2 was its compatibility with existing ammunition stocks and production capabilities, as it retains the Soviet-standard 152 mm caliber. This strategic decision underscores the country’s prudence in leveraging available resources while upgrading its military capabilities. The advantages of wheeled vehicles like the Dana M2 over tracked counterparts cannot be overstated. They offer cost-efficiency in construction, easier maintenance, and superior mobility. With features such as adjustable tire pressure for enhanced off-road maneuverability and power-assisted steering, these vehicles excel in various terrains, enhancing operational flexibility.

The Dana M2’s deployment involves a skilled crew operating in a well-structured layout within the vehicle. The integration of computerized automatic fire control in the latest Dana M2 version has significantly reduced the required crew size to as few as two individuals. This technological advancement not only streamlines operations but also underscores the evolution of artillery systems towards greater automation and efficiency. The artillery system’s ammunition versatility further accentuates its combat readiness. With shell types ranging from high-explosive variants with impressive ranges of up to 20 kilometers to anti-tank munitions for direct-fire applications against armored targets, suited for diverse combat scenarios.

Ukraine has purchased Dana self-propelled guns from the Czech Republic, which are already helping Ukraine Army destroy the occupiers on the front lines. Used by Ukrainian Army during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. An unknown number of 152 mm ShKH DANA M2 and 152 mm ShKH DANA vz. 77 were supplied by the Czech Republic in 2022. Ukraine’s acquisition of the Dana M2 was intended as an interim solution to enhance the mobility of its artillery units. This involved transitioning from towed artillery to self-propelled systems like the domestically produced 2S22 Bogdana 155 mm artillery system. However, the decision to retain the Soviet-standard caliber was influenced by Ukraine’s existing ammunition stocks and its production capabilities.
